Short Take: Mariners thump Sox to avoid sweep

West Coast roadtrips are always a crummy experience for fans of the Chicago White Sox. The games start late and inevitably Sox fans roll out of bed the next morning bleary-eyed from watching a miserable performance. But thus far this weekend, the Pale Hose faithful were treated to two solid performances that translated into dramatic wins for their beloved team, giving the Sox their first West Coast series win since 2000. Unfortunately, the Sox failed to pull of the sweep as the Mariners came up big in the series finale, walking away with a 9-2 win on a gorgeous afternoon at Safeco Field.

Former Mariner Freddy Garcia got the start for the Sox today, and pretty much served up batting practice for his former team during his entire outing. Well, he was serving up batting practice when he wasn't throwing balls past the hapless Chris Widger and adding to his American League-leading wild pitch total. After a near-perfect outing Monday night, Garcia follows up with what might be one of his worst outings ever, not even making it out of the fifth inning. Garcia's line for his short afternoon of work? 11 hits, 8 runs, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Numbers like that won't cut it in October.

The Sox offense started hot out of the gates, but but the midpoint of the game their brains seemed like they were already on the plane to Texas. Pablo Ozuna got the game started with a bunt single, swiped second and scored on a Paul Konerko double. Aaron Rowand singled to move KOnerko to third and the Sox had a prime scoring opportunity which ended up getting squandered when Chris Widger grounded out. Rowand would add an RBI triple in the fourth to score Konerko, but aside from that the Sox offense just couldn't get anything going in spite of rapping out eight hits on the afternoon.

The Sox leave the cool lush greenery of Seattle for the Texas heat and a four game series against the Rangers starting tomorrow night at Ameriquest Field. Mark Buehrle takes the hill against Juan Dominguez with a 7:05 first pitch.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Ozzieball early turns to slumberball late as the Sox eagerly await Podsednik's return tomorrow.
