Unlucky Seven

August 20, vs. New York

"Another lackluster effort in a lackluster loss."

Short Take:  Sox shut out by Shawn Chacon, Yankees.  Today's 5-0 loser is #7 in a row.

There was little to talk about Saturday afternoon at the Cell, except for the incredibly poor play of the home team.  The Yankees only needed to toss Shawn Chacon, a pitcher so bad they threw him out of Colorado, to keep the slumping lumber in it's week-long frigid state as the Sox losing streak reached 7.

But to be honest, nothing went the Sox's way today.  Starter Orlando Hernandez had himself a day to remember, or forget on the mound.  After being warned by home plate umpire Larry Vanover in the second after throwing a pitch behind Alex Rodriguez, Hernandez went on to balk and commit a pair of errors; certainly not helping his cause for win #9.  He did start out well, though, retiring the first nine Yankees he faced in order.  However, the second time through the Bronx Bombers' line-up, Hernandez had significantly more problems.

In the fourth, Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams lead off with back-to-back singles.  Gary Sheffield grounded back to Hernandez, but a throwing error by the usually defensively sound pitcher allowed Jeter to score and allowed Williams to coast safely into third.  A double by Alex Rodriguez plated Williams and Sheffield and the Sox were in a hole, 3-0.  Given the team's recent struggles offensively, it was one that was too large to overcome.

Again, for the Sox it wasn't as much a complete offensive meltdown, it was a meltdown with runners on base.  In the first, third, fifth, sixth, and eighth, the Sox had a runner in scoring position, but could not find the hit to drive a run home.  Ground outs, pop up double plays... you name it.  If you can imagine a way to kill a rally, the Sox probably displayed that this afternoon.

If you must find a bright spot in this mess of a loss, it would be the combined bullpen work of Bobby Jenks, Neal Cotts, and Luis Vizcaino.  The three pitched the final three innings and only allowed one hit in the frame.  But that was far too little and far too late.  Starting pitching, defense, and hitting all missing in unlucky loss number 7 for the Sox.

The Indians, meanwhile beat the Baltimore Orioles, 6-1 in Cleveland tonight, meaning the Sox lead in the divison is down to 8 1/2 games.  Ex-Yankee Jose Contreras takes the mound tomorrow afternoon against Randy Johnson.  The game will be shown on Comcast Sports Net and begins at 2:05 Central time.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Awful game.  The Sox squander chances in more than half their innings.
