Stumbling Sox

August 19 v. New York Yankees

"Pierzynski drove in Timo for the Sox only run of the game; valiant effort by Garland wasted."

Short Take:Sox slumping offense manages only 6 hits as losing streak hits six games.

It's still way too early to panic, but the Sox' offensive woes contiued tonight in the opener of a 3-game home series against the Yankees. The Yankees, behind the strong pitching of Mike Mussina, held the Sox bats in check all night. Jon Garland turned in another solid effort in the 3-1 defeat, allowing only two earned runs over 7 innings of work.

Playing without Paul Konerko and the injured Scott Podsednik, the Sox got things going with three singles in the first inning off Mussina. Timo Perez, leading off and playing left field tonight, started the inning with a single. Tadahito Iguchi moved him to second base on a groundout, and Perez moved to third after a Carl Everett single. A.J. Pierzynski was batting in the cleanup spot. Pierzynski had a rough night, striking out three times against Yankee pitching. But he came through in the first with an RBI single to give the Sox an early 1-0 lead.

The Yankees struck back with a run in the third inning to tie the game off of Garland. Gary Sheffield singled home Robinson Cano from third base to tie the game at 1. Sheffield was caught in a rundown between first and second on the play and retired, but the run had already crossed home plate. The score remained tied at one until the Yankee half of the 5th inning. With Tino Martinez already on first with a single, Cano singled him over to third. On the play, rightfielder Jermaine Dye was unable to pick up the ball cleanly and was charged with an error allowing Cano to advance to second base. With men on second and third, Derek Jeter hit into a groundout which scored Martinez to put the Yankees up 2-1. Cano would then score on a single by Bernie Williams, putting the Yankees up by the final 3-1 margin. Garland battled the Yankees all night, throwing 120 pitches in his 7 innings of work. Cliff Politte retired two batters in the 8th, and Damaso Marte pitched 1.1 scoreless innings also in relief.

The Sox bats were quiet all night. After the first inning, the Sox only were able to manage three more hits, one in each of the 6th, 7th and 8th innings. They never got a runner past first base after the first inning, and Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect 1-2-3 9th inning to get the save for the Yanks.

Hopefully the Sox will find their hitting shoes quickly, because they get right back after it tomorrow afternoon. Orlando Hernandez (8-5, 4.67) will try to end the losing streak against starter Shawn Chacon (2-8, 3.59). Gametime is 12:20 pm CDT.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
3 hits in the final 8 innings just isn't going to get it done.
