Santana Rocks Sox

August 17th vs. Minnesota Twins

"If it weren't for Paul Konerko, we'd have a goose egg on the board right now."

Short Take: Lack of offense plus big inning surrendered by Mark Buehrle lead to a sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Twins.

In a rematch of the first Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN of the season, Sox hurler Mark Buehrle and Twins ace Johann Santana took the mound for their respective teams. Both have had very positive careers, giving great help to their respective ballclubs. Santana won the first round. Unfortunately, he would go on to win the second matchup with Buehrle as well. This time, to the tune of a 5-1 score.

Matthew LeCroy started off the scoring in the top of the second leading off with a home run. He went for an encore in the top of the fourth inning, yet another lead-off shot, which gave the Twins a relatively early 2-0 lead going into the meat of the game. And then Buehrle started to struggle. Mike Redmond lead off with a single in the fifth inning, and was sacrificed over by Jason Bartlett. After Lew Ford singled Redmond to third, Buehrle was charged with a balk, allowing Redmond to score and Ford to advance to second base. After Ford stole third base, Nick Punto hit a towering sacrifice fly, which allowed Ford to score. With the bases clear, Brent Abernathy doubled and scored as Justin Morneau reached on an error. A big crooked number went on the board in the fifth inning, and the Twins had staked a nice 5-0 cushion at the halfway point of the game.

Seemingly every inning Santana would take the mound, the Sox were retired in order. When they did get a couple of hits in each the seventh and eighth innings, they were unable to do anything with their base runners. Finally, when it appeared as if our Sox were going to be shut out for only the third time of the season, Paul Konerko led off the bottom of the nineth inning with a home run down the left field line, which would account for all of the offense for our beloved Palehose tonight.

Maybe it's a good thing that our Sox have a day off tomorrow. It would be best for them to forget this, their first five-game losing streak of the season, and start a new winning streak filled with the one element that catapulted them to this large divisional lead and has been absent for a while now: Ozzieball. On Friday night, the Sox will begin a three-game series against the New York Yankees at wonderful Comiskey Park. Jon Garland goes for his 17th win of the season. Gametime will be at 7:05 pm and can be seen on WGN if you can't make it to the ballpark.
