Token Victory...For the Twins

August 15 vs. Minnesota Twins

"Uribe, Everett, Blum, and Crede seemed to be the only ones to do anything tonight."

Short Take: Non-standard lineup plus lack of Ozzieball leads to a loss to the third-place Minnesota Twins.

After a decent roadtrip against the Yankees and Red Sox, our beloved White Sox came home and were faced by the Minnesota Twins on a beautiful Monday evening in mid-August. The Sox threw Jose Contreras, who completely shut down the Yankees in his previous start, to the mound, while the Twins countered with Kyle Lohse. Both pitchers have been known to receive very little run support in their starts. Would the trend continue?

The entire scoring for the game happened in the middle third of the game. The Twins did all of their damage in the top of the fourth inning. Nick Punto led off the inning with a single, later stealing second base. Joe Mauer followed with a walk, and was later forced out on a fielder's choice, which allowed Justin Morneau to reach safely. After Matthew LeCroy walked to load the bases, Lew Ford singled both Punto and Morneau in. Michael Ryan got Ford over to the hot corner on a single of his own, and both Ford and Ryan were sent home on a single by Brent Abernathy. The Twins finished off the inning with a 4-0 lead.

Our beloved Palehose would scratch their way back into the game in the bottom of the following two innings. In the fifth inning, after Geoff Blum and Joe Crede got consecutive singles, advancing to second and third on a groundout by Timo Perez, Juan Uribe doubled in Blum. Unfortunately, Crede was thrown out at the plate. In the sixth inning, Carl Everett led off with a single followed by a single by Paul Konerko. Konerko was caught trying to stretch a single to a double, while Everett moved over to the hot corner. After AJ Pierzynski was hit by a pitch, Jermaine Dye sacrificed Everett home to complete the scoring for our beloved Palehose. Our Sox dropped this first game in the three-game series at home to the Minnesota Twins 4-2.

This was nothing more than a "token" win for the Twins, as they were already so far behind the White Sox to begin with. In the long run, what is important is that our Palehose still own the best record in baseball, and our divisional clinching magic number is still at a very low 34! In addition, our beloved haven't lost more than three games in a row all year long! This is absolutely nothing to hang your heads about. The Palehose have a very good chance of getting back on the right track tomorrow night, as Freddy Garcia faces off against Brad Radke. The game will start at 7:05 pm and can be seen on Comcast Sports Net Chicago if you can't make it to the ballgame.
