Sox Sink Mariners!

August 8th vs. Seattle

Short Take:Sox longball magic works again at home

Let's face it, Sox fans. The familiar confines of US Cellular Field haven't been kind to our beloved Pale Hose lately. The Sox dropped 2 out of 3 to the mediocre-at-best Blue Jays in front of huge crowds and then sleepwalked through a loss to Seattle on Friday. But solid pitching backed up by solid defense ruled the day on Saturday, and Sox fans were treated to more of the same on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon at US Cellular as the Sox tipped the Mariners 3-1 to take the series and pick up a little momentum for their East Coast road trip this week.

Jon Garland got the ball and the start for the Sox today, looking for his 16th win of the season. He made quick work of the Mariners the first two innings, retiring the side in order. With one out in the third, Garland found himself in a bit of a jam. Chris Snelling walked with one out, and Wiki Gonzalez ripped a combacker to Garland which ricocheted off Garland's glove and dribbled past Juan Uribe. The always-dangerous Ichiro Suzuki then slapped a ball past Uribe to score Snelling and put the Mariners out in front. Garland quickly got back on track with a stellar snab of a Willie Bloomquist line shot and then induced Raul Ibanez to ground out.

Meanwhile, the Sox offense slumbered in the early going. With the Mariners sending Jeff Harris to the hill for his first career start, many of the Sox faithful were expecting the worst...that a guys they'd never seen before would look like Cy Young. Harris looked sharp for the first 3 innings, but the Sox took the lead on an Aaron Rowand single which was followed immediately by Paul Konerko drilling a Harris offering over the left field fence for his 27th home run of the season. With the Sox on top, Garland settled into a nice groove and retired the next ten batters he faced. With the Sox up 3-1 thanks to a Joe Crede solo shot in the fifth, trouble would knock on Jon's door again in the seventh, when Adrian Beltre walked and Jeremy Reed rolled a bunt down the third base line that Crede tried to will foul to no avail. Again, Garland was able to unjam himself though by fanning Yuniesky Bettancourt and getting Snelling to fly out to left thanks to a brilliant running grab by Scott Podsednik fighting off the sun and wind. Damaso Marte and then Cliff Politte would relieve Garland in the eight with runners on first and second. Politte had the unenviable task of getting slugger Richie Sexson out, and Sexson tattooed a pitch to deep center. Aaron Rowand drew a perfect bead on it and hauled in the ball as he smashed into the wall, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Dustin Hermanson worked a 1-2-3 ninth to preserve the win

The Sox head to the Big Apple for a 3-game series against the Bronx Bombers starting tomorrow night. Orlando Hernandez returns to the place he once called home to face Mike Mussina. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 CDT.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Once again, the Sox use the big ball to put up a small but good enough number.
