Sox Rock Bedard

July 29th at Baltimore Orioles

How many Grinders did KW use today:
6
"Iguchi, Everett, Konerko, Pierzynski, Uribe, and El Duque all get grinders tonight."

Short Take: Pauk Konerko and Carl Everett go deep, a little more Ozzieball is displayed, while El Duque provides a quality outing...all adding up to a nice win for our Sox to open up this four-game series in Baltimore.

A reoccurring theme this season for our beloved Chicago White Sox is that they have taken advantage of teams in slumps. The Baltimore Orioles were losers of 10 of their last 12 games prior to tonight's game at Camden Yards. Regardless of Baltimore's cold streak, our Sox needed to have a quality start from Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez, since the O's have an offense that can go off at any time...and quality is just what was received, giving our Palehose a well-deserved 7-2 victory to spark this four-game series.

Our Sox didn't wait very long to score. Scott Podesdnik lead-off with a walk, advancing to second on a pass ball, and stole third base. Orioles manager Lee Mazilli got into an argument over the stolen base and was immediately tossed from the game. A sacrifice fly from Carl Everett got Podsednik in, giving the Sox a 1-0 lead without even getting a hit in the first inning!

Baltimore knotted the score in the bottom of the same frame. Melvin Mora was hit by a pitch, Miguel Tejada singled, and then Rafael Palmiro got Mora in while advancing Tejada to third. The score was knotted at one run a piece after the first frame.

The Sox really frustrated Oriole starter Erik Bedard tonight, especially in the fourth inning. Tadahito Iguchi and Everett opened the inning with back-to-back singles. All Paul Konerko did after that was launch a three-run bomb to left field, giving the White Sox and El Duque a 4-1 lead. This was all done before Bedard was even able to record an out!

That 4-1 score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth inning. Mora and Tejada hit back-to-back doubles, Tejada's scoring Mora, closing the gap to a two-run margin. And so, the Sox led 4-2 after five innings.

From that point on, the Sox turned up the jets just a little bit. In the seventh inning, Iguchi singled on a short flair to very shallow right field, and Everett homered to right center field, increasing the south siders' lead to four.

"Ozzieball" was played perfectly in the eighth inning, as Juan Uribe singled and stole second, his third stolen base of the season. Iguchi was able to get him in with an RBI single, which ultimately closed the scoring for the game.

Cliff Politte, Damaso Marte, and Luis Vizcaino were able to put together three innings of scoreless relief, assisting El Duque in getting his eighth victory of the season, which was yet another quality start. Our Sox came out victorious to the tune of a 7-2 count over the Baltimore Orioles and now lead the season series with the O's 3-2. This win, coupled with Minnesota's loss in New York, lowers our divisional-clinching magic number to 49. There is a very short turn-around until the next game, as the Sox go for another win tomorrow afternoon at 12:15 in Baltimore. The game can be seen on Fox 32 for us Chicagoland viewers.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Scott Podesdnik advanced to second on a pass ball, stole third, and scored in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Juan Uribe stole second and scored on an RBI single by Iguchi in the eighth.
