WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

6th Inning Meltdown

July 26th at Kansas City Royals

"Ozuna, Pierzynski, and Dye seemed to be the only ones with any sense of offensive production out there tonight."

Short Take: Very little offense, plus below mediocre defense, spells defeat for Sox, as they neither won nor died trying for one of the first times of the season.

It is hard to run the table against a divisional opponent you face 19 times in a season. Our White Sox were on pace to do that, winning the first 10 games in the season series against the Kansas City Royals...until tonight. After an hour and twenty-three minute rain delay, the White Sox played arguably their worst game of the season, as Mark Buehrle did not have the most stellar of pitching performances, and his defense nor offense backed him up in the sloppiest game of the year for our beloved Palehose. Of course, it didn't help that one-third of the lineup was made of non-regulars, as Pablo Ozuna spelled for Joe Crede, Timo Perez basically spelled for Aaron Rowand (Scott Podesdnik moved from LF to CF), and Willie Harris spelled for Tadahito Iguchi. Was that a Sunday lineup Ozzie Guillen was running out there tonight?

The scoring started in the third inning, as Juan Uribe walked and scored on an RBI tripple by Ozuna to the corner of right field. After the first three innings of play, the Sox led 1-0 and were looking like they'd sleepwalk their way to another victory over the Royals.

But, not so fast! The bottom of the next inning of play saw the Royals tie the score. Mike Sweeny, who has historically fared well against Buehrle, led off with a double. Emil Brown hit a routine pop-up that Harris had problems with, allowing both Brown to reach base safely and Sweeny to advance to third. Sweeny scored on a fly-out by Matt Stairs. After four frames, the score was tied at one run a piece.

The meltdown came in the bottom of the sixth inning, where sloppy play made the Royals batting order appear to be world-beaters. Chip Ambres singled to lead off the inning, and Sweeny bunted him over while reaching safely himself. Brown doubled Ambres in to give the Royals a 2-1 lead. Harris then botched a throw on a chopper by Stairs, which allowed Sweeny to score. After Angel Berroa walked, Mark Teahen hit the equivalent of an inside-the-park grand slam. He got a three-RBI double, but was able to score himself, as Harris sloppily made a very poor throw home. All in all, the first seven men who came up to bat were not retired. Ozzie allowed Buehrle to stay in to maintain his streak of consecutive games of pitching at least six innings, which is nearing 50 at this moment. After all was said and done, the Royals had garnered a 7-1 lead.

Absolutely no more dents were made on the scoreboard from that point on, and the Palehose lost their most sloppy game of the season 7-1 to Kansas City, and now are 10-1 against them in the 2005 campaign--they neither won nor died trying. Because this type of game has been so rare for our Sox this season, it can be forgiveable. Even with a Sox loss tonight, a Yankee victory over the Twins, decreased our magic number to 52. Let's all hope that they can get back in the "win" column tomorrow afternoon at 1:10 p.m., as Jon Garland goes for his 16th win of the season. Tune in to Comcast Sports Net Chicago to watch the game.

After walking to lead off the game, Scott Podesdnik was caught stealing.

Pablo Ozuna

His RBI tripple in the third inning produced the only run the Sox would score.
