Mauled In The Mausoleum!

July 3rd at Oakland

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Ozuna leads off and plays short, while Widger handles catching duty."

Short Take: Sox continute their struggles by the Bay

Let's face it folks, there's some things that just don't mix. Oil and water. Tequila and Coke. The White Sox and the Network Associates Coliseum. Once again, the Sox fall victim to the closest thing they have resembling a curse, falling to the suddenly surging Athletics 7-2 in a game chock-full of boneheaded plays in the field and lousy performances at the plate.

Two year ago, the words Barry Zito struck fear into the hearts of all baseball fans when it came time for their favorite team to face Oakland. Oaklan'd brash lefty and his big sweeping curveball used to baffle American League hitters. Zito entered today's game with a losing record and a 4-plus ERA, looking like quite the mortal. The Sox got to the 2002 AL Cy Young winner in the early going, as Frank Thomas pounded a hooking home run into the second deck at the Coliseum in the top of the fourth. Zito's former teammate Jermaine Dye followed Thomas in the next frame with a solo shot, and it looked like the Sox would pull of yet another low-scoring caper.

Meanwhile, Sox ace Mark Buehrle cruised for the first five innings, allowing a scant five hits and inducing two double plays. But just like his last start in Oakland, the curse of the elephant came around and bit Buehrle in a bad way in the bottom of the sixth. Buehrle gave up back-to-back singles to start the inning, and Eric Byrnes ripped a comebacker to Buehrle which had the potential to be the start of a 1-4-3 double play. But instead, Buehrle tossed the ball over Tadahito Iguchi's head and into center field, allowing a run to score. Two batters later, Buehrle misplayed another comebacker off his glove and then failed to scoop it up, tying the game at 2-2. Could it get worse? Absolutely. The A's pounded out 2 more runs on two more hits before the inning came to a close, and the Sox found themselves in the hole in Oakland once again.

Things didn't get any better for Big Mark in the seventh. Once again, Oakland got runners on first and second. Nick Swisher steps into the box and belts a single to score Eric Chavez. By that point, Buehrle's day was done. Luis Vizcaino inherits Buehrle's two baserunners and does what he does best, allowing them both to score on a Mark Ellis single, giving the A's a five run lead. The Sox offense continued to sleepwalk in the late going. Joe Crede made it to third base with one out in the 8th, but Iguchi and Thomas couldn't get him home.

Thankfully, today marks the last game the Sox will play in Oakland this year. The Pale Hose return home tomorrow to start a 6 game homestand against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Brandon McCarthy gets the start for the Sox against Hideo Nomo, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 CDT.

Ozzieball Update:
Ozuna does his part with bunts and steals, but the rest of the team swings for the fences.
