Not In Control In Oakland

July 1 at Oakland

How many Grinders did KW use today:

"Podsednik scoring a run with his wheels, and Everett with a RBI in the first."

Short Take:  Sox continue to look awful in Oakland, they drop this one 6-2 behind a wild Jose Contreras.

Maybe its the time change, maybe its the stupid Elephant logo, its got to be something. The Sox just look bad in Oakland. Take their best record in baseball and throw it out for three days becuase we're taking a trip to McAfree Coliseum! The Sox head into Oakland, or the House Of Horrors fresh off a sweep over the Detroit Tigers, Jose Contreras would take the mound for the Sox over A's starter Rich Harden who is making his third start from coming off the DL.

The Sox would start off pretty. They took a 2-0 lead after their half of the first. Scott Podsednik lead off with a walk and stole second. He advanced to third when Tadahito Iguchi hit a sac fly. Podsednik scored after Aaron Rowand reached first base on a error. Rowand would come around to score from first base on Carl Everett's RBI double.

Contreras was looking ok, Jose was pitching to an A's team that was looking to be walked all night, and why not? He left the bases loaded in the second inning, and pitched a 1-2-3 third inning. But, in the forth things would go downhill for Contreras. The inning started off with a walk to Scott Hatteberg, Bobby Kielty doubled, and Hatteberg scored and Kielty moved to third when Dan Johnson grounded out. Kielty scored to tie the game 2-2 when Contreras threw a wild pitch. The A's put two more on the board in the fifth to make it 4-2 A's. After Contreras walked Bobby Kielty to load the bases, Ozzie had enough with Contreras's seven walks and three wild pitches. He called on Kevin Walker and before you could sound a horn from the stands he walked Nick Swisher on a full count.and the go ahead run scored. That was it for Walker and Luis Vizcaino came in and walked the first batter he faced scoring Hatteberg. Vizcaino would leave the bases full by getting Jason Kendall to ground out.

The A's stuck a fork in the Sox in the eighth, Scott Hatteberg hit a 2-run single with the bases loaded off Neal Cotts to make it 6-2 A's. Gross.

Thats how this one would end, in typical Oakland fashion. But, not to worry. The Sox MLB best record of 53-24 falls to a MLB best record of 53-25. Tomorrow, Jon Garland takes the hill against Kirk Saarloos. Game time is at 8:05pm and it can be seen on WGN.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Podsednik creates early problems for Harden, but the Sox still can't overcome the Oakland jinx.
