Dueling In The Motor City

June 28 at Detroit

How many Grinders did KW use today:

"Buehrle dominated like he has all season. Politte and Hermanson secured the win. Uribe, Podsednik, and Dye helped out with the offense."

Short Take:  Buehrle pitches brillant...again, and the Sox have just enough offense to take the series opener over the Tigers 2-1 after a heart attack inducing Tigers 9th.

The Sox shook off two losses to their crosstown foes tonight behind their ace Mark Buehrle. Buehrle went through the Tigers lineup like he had something better to do tonight. Maybe he did. Buehrle uped his record to 10-1. The Sox offense, who hasn't been scoring many runs, came through just enough to take the 2-1 win over the Tigers.

The Tigers got on the board first though. In their half of the second inning, with one out, Craig Monroe singled and stole second and then advanced to third on Chris Widger's throwing error trying to catch Monroe's steal. Chris Shelton singled and Monroe scored to make it 1-0 Tigers. Damn throwing errors.

The Sox played their "smartball" in the fifth. Juan Uribe tripled with one out and Scott Podsednik brought him home on a sac fly to tie the game 1-1. In the sixth, Jermaine Dye hit a solo home run to give the Sox a 2-1 lead.

What a better way to show the Detroit faithful what they'll be seeing on July 12th. Mark Buehrle pitched 6 2/3 innings, he gave up 8 hits and one run and struck out six. Cliff Politte came in to pitch to a batter in the seventh and the eighth inning. Politte kept the Tigers off the bases. Dustin Hermanson came in to pitch the ninth inning. Ivan Rodriguez lead off and hit a 420-foot triple. He celebrated like the Tigers had already won the game at third. So with no outs and the tying run at third Dmitri "The Indians and Tigers are going to battle for the Central Crown this year" Young came up and flew out to first. One Out. Craig Monroe grounded out to third base keeping Rodeiguez at third. Two outs. Chris Shelton grounded out to second base. Game over! Sox win 2-1. Wow.

Buehrle gets the win, Hermanson with the save, and the Sox keep on winning. Their record goes to 51-24. And in one run games they are 21-8! Tomorrow, Brandon McCarthy will get the start against Jason Johnson. Game time is at 6:05 and it can be seen on Comcast Sports Net.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Uribe scored via the sac fly by Podsednik, Dye won the game with a home run. Thats all folks.
