We Can't Always Beat The Cubs...

June 25 vs. Cubs

How many Grinders did KW use today:
2
"Everett and Dye the only ones to get to Maddux."

Short Take:  A early 4-run hole is too deep for the Sox to dig out of, Maddux was on as the Sox lose the second game of this weekend series against the Cubs 6-2.

Jose Contreras simply just didn't have it today folks. He was shelled in the first inning and the Sox could only muster five hits and two runs off Greg Maddux.

The game wouldn't start or end pretty for the Sox. In the Cubs first, Corey Patterson reached on a bunt single, Neifi Perez was hit by a pitch, and after Derrek Lee flew out, Jeromy Burnitz walked to load the bases for Aramis Ramirez. Ramirez launched a grand slam in the left field seats to give the Cubs a quick 4-0 lead. .

The Sox had a scoring opportunity in their half of the first, Scott Podsednik doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third when Tadahito Iguchi flew out to deep right field. Podsednik tried to score when Aaron Rowand hit a weak ground ball to Maddux. Podsednik was caught dead at home plate as the ball didn't even get past Maddux.

The only signs of life the Sox showed was in the second inning. Carl Everett and Jermaine Dye hit back to back solo home runs to start the inning making it a 4-2 Cubs lead. A.J. Pierzynski reached on a error by Neifi Perez. Joe Crede came up and hit a ball which looked to be a game tying two-run homer, but left fielder Todd Hollandsworth make a play catching the ball at the top of the fence to take away the home run for Crede. That would be all the excitment for the Sox fans this afternoon.

After that it was all Cubs. They got a run in the forth inning after the Sox couldn't turn a double play with one out and runners at first and third which scored Jerry Hairston Jr to make it 5-2, and with two outs in the seventh, Neal Cotts intentionally walked Aramis Ramirez with a runner on second. The move would backfire and Todd Walker singled to score the runner from second to make it 6-2 Cubs. The Sox would go 1-2-3 the rest of the way to suffer the loss.

Tomorrow's game is going to be an all out war. The Sox (50-23) will be going for the season series win and the Cubs (37-36) with try and make it a draw and a weekend series win for 2005. Jon Garland (12-2 3.40ERA) will be bumped up to make the start against Mark Prior (4-1 2.93ERA) who will be making his first start after being on the DL. Game time is at 2:05pm and it can be seen on WGN.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
The intentional walk backfired, Podsednik running on contact failed in the first.
