Making The Plays, Winning The Game

June 10 at San Diego

"Cotts continues to be strong out of the pen, Rowand and Dye made big plays in the 7th inning, AJ, Crede with RBIs. Garland win his 10th win AND a RBI."

Short Take:  Sox take the first game at PETCO Park 4-2 behind Jon Garland's 10th win and Aaron Rowand's run saving catch.

The last time Jon Garland faced the San Diego Padres was June 15, 2003 at US Cellular Field. Garland surrenderd three hits and one run and got the loss. That was Garland's luck back then, if he wasn't giving up a big inning, he wasn't getting much run support. Now, in 2005, Garland would face the Padres again, this time at PETCO Park he would get that victory.

The Sox got it going in the second inning. With one out, Jermaine Dye singled and advanced to second base after AJ Pierzynski's single. Juan Uribe grounded into a force out for the second out that brought Pierzynski to third base and Uribe to first. Joe Crede came up and got the Sox on the board with a RBI-single. Jon Garland followed that up with his own RBI-single to make it 2-0 Sox. AJ Pierzysnki hit a solo home run to the deepest part of the park in the seventh inning to put the Sox up 3-0.

Garland served up a solo shot to Brian Giles in the Padres half of the seventh to make the score 3-1. Garland got into trouble after that. Phil Nevin singled then Ramon Hernandez singled to right field. Nevin tried to advanced to third but Jermaine Dye threw a strike to Joe Crede to get Nevin at third base. Garland still wasn't out of the woods yet. Robert Fick doubled to put Hernandez at third. Khalil Greene came up and ripped a line drive to Aaron Rowand who made a diving catch to save the two runs from scoring and to get out of the inning. The Sox got a insurance run in their half of the eigth. Joe Crede scored on a wild pitch to Scott Podsednik to make it 4-1.

Neal Cotts came out of the pen to hold the game for Jon Garland in the eighth. Cotts held the game pitching a 1-2-3 inning. Dustin Hermanson came in to pitch the ninth and gave up a run, but kept the Padres off the bases for the rest of the inning making Jon Garland the first 10 game winner in the American Leauge.

With the 4-2 win, the Sox record moves to 41-19. Tomorrow, Mark Buehrle tires for his eighth win of the season when he goes against Tim Stauffer for the Padres. Game time is at 9:05pm and can be seen on WGN.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Sox continue to score by putting hits together. That helps when not everybody can hit a long ball eh?
