Sluggish Sox

May 27 at Texas

"Paul Konerko hit his 13th home run of the season, and Willie Harris contributed two hits and an RBI."

Short Take:McCarthy roughed up as Sox lose series opener.

The White Sox arrived in Texas late this morning, and their bats never really woke up against the Rangers in a 6-2 defeat. Starter Brandon McCarthy, making his second career start, was inconsistent and gave up 4 home runs in 5 innings of work to account for all of the scoring for Texas tonight. Ranger 1B Mark Teixeira hit a solo home run in the first, and Alfonso Soriano led off the second inning with a home run to stake the Rangers to an early 2-0 lead.

McCarthy's counterpart this evening was another impressive rookie pitcher, Chris Young. Young silenced the Sox bats for 6 innings, not allowing a hit until the 3rd inning. Willie Harris reached on a bunt single with one out in the inning, and third baseman Pablo Ozuna followed with a single of his own. The Sox would come up empty, however, and the score remained 2-0 going into the 5th inning. Up to this point, McCarthy himself had only allowed three hits, albeit two of them home runs. After McCarthy struck out the first hitter of the inning, he would walk David Dellucci, whom he had previously struck out his first two plate appearances. The next batter was shortstop Michael Young, and he jumped on the first offering by McCarthy for a two-run homer to put the Rangers up by 4. Unfortunately, the inning would not end there. With two outs, Hank Blalock singled and scored on a home run by Soriano, his second of the game. McCarthy would finish the inning, but the damage had been done. He did have 4 K's on the night, with 3 BB in the losing effort.

In contrast, the Sox just could not get to Chris Young tonight. They scored the only run off of him in the 7th, courtesy of a Paul Konerko home run. But that would be all they would get off of Young, who pitched 8 innings and notched 5 K's for the win. The Sox added a run in the 9th off reliever Doug Brocail. AJ Pierzynski and Aaron Rowand both singled, and Pierzynski scored on an opposite-field RBI single by Harris. With two men on base and two outs, Texas brought in closer Francisco Cordero who threw one pitch for the save. Pinch hitter Timo Perez swung at the first offering by Cordero, and he flew out to end the game.

The Sox have now lost two in a row, and their record drops to 4-4 on the current 10-game road trip. Tomorrow they turn to Jon Garland (8-1, 2.57) to get them back on track against Chan Ho Park (4-1, 4.61). Gametime is 3:05 pm CDT.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Harris tried to get things going with a bunt single early, but to no avail. By the time they were able to string a few hits together, it was the 9th inning and too little, too late.
