"Iguchi was the star, and Everett delivered the winning blow. Signs of life from Rowand and Dye as they swap spots in the order."

Short Take:Sox take the lead late, make it count as they hold off Royals in series opener.

Mark Buehrle didn't have his best outing of the season, but he lasted 8 innings to earn a 5-4 decision over the Royals. He got off to a bad start in the first inning, when Mike Sweeney hit a two-run home run to give the Royals an early 2-0 lead. Sweeney was a thorn in Buehrle's side all night, going 3-4 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI.

With the score still 2-0, Tadahito Iguchi hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot into the left field seats to tie the contest. Buehrle setled down, and at one point retired 9 in a row and 13 of 14 batters until Sweeney came up in the 5th. Sweeney took a 2-1 pitch into the seats for his second homer of the game, a solo shot giving the Royals the lead back. Two batters later, Eli Marrero homered to straight away center, putting KC up 4-2.

Royals hurler Brian Anderson delivered a solid performance, pitching into the 7th inning. He didn't last long in the 7th, however, as Aaron Rowand hit the first pitch of the inning into the right centerfield seats, cutting the defecit in half. Buehrle would keep the score 4-3, pitching a scoreless 8th inning to set the stage for the comeback. In the home half of the 8th, Scott Podsednik hit a 1-out single to center. Iguchi followed with a bloop single to right, moving Podsednik to second. Carl Everett then hit the first pitch he saw from reliever Andrew Sisco off the wall in right center for a double. That scored Podsednik and Iguchi to put the Sox on top for the first time in the game, 5-4. With that lead, the Sox set a major league record by leading in each of their first 26 games of the season. Closer of the day Shingo Takatsu pitched an easy 1-2-3 9th inning for his 7th save of the season to preserve the win for Buehrle and the Sox.

The Sox raise their record to a major league best 19-7, good for a 3.5 game lead over the second place Twins in the AL Central Division. They will send Freddy Garcia (2-1, 2.83) to the mound tomorrow against Runelvys Hernandez (1-3, 5.06). The Sox are currently 3-1 on this short 6-game homestand. Gametime tomorrow is 7:05 pm CDT.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Everett picked off in 1st inning, Iguchi doubled up trying to take third on the play to squelch early rally. Iguchi decides to abandon smallball, at least for one at bat, as he delivers his first home run as a member of the White Sox in the 3rd inning. Three hits in 8th inning yield two runs and a victory.
