Sweepless Against Seattle!

April 17th vs Seattle

How many Grinders did KW use today:

"Iguchi makes like a grinder and slaps the ball all over the place to get on, but the rest of the team swings for the fences."

Short Take: Garcia Less Than Stellar Against Former Mates

For the fourth time this season, the Chicago White Sox found themselves in the position to kick their opponents when they're down and walk away with a sweep. Sadly, for the fourth time this season they failed. Once again, the Sox take the first two games of a set before dropping the finale with today's 5-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners before an audience of 2-legged and 4-legged creatures at a sundrenched US Cellular Field.

So much for Freddy Garcia's recent dominance in day games. Sox-killer Ichiro Suzuki smacked Garcia's second offering over the right-field fence to give the Mariners the lead right out of the gates. Three batters later, Raul Ibanez deposited another of Garcia's hangers beyond the wall in centerfield, and the M's had themselves a 2-run lead. The Sox were immediately thrown into catchup mode, and the results weren't pretty in the early going. Timo Perez walked to open the Sox first frame and was moved to second by Tad Iguchi. Paul Konerko drew a walk to put 2 ducks on the pond, but Jermaine Dye fanned to end the inning.

Garcia would settle down after his rough first, and the Sox finally got on the board in the third against Gil Meche. Juan Uribe slapped a double to start the inning and came home on an Iguchi single. Iguchi would cross the plate a short time later as Carl Everett emerged from his slump in a righteous fashion with a home run into the Mariners' bullpen to give the Sox a 3-2 lead. The Mariners continued to hit the ball hard off Garcia, but didn't score again until their 3-run fifth inning, which featured lousy pitch selection by Garcia, lousy defense behind the plate by AJ Pierzynski, and lousy defense in right field by Jermaine Dye, who completely misplayed a hit by Sox castaway Wilson Valdez that turned into a triple. Garcia would exit the game before the eighth, giving way to Cliff Politte who worked 2 innings of shutout ball and fanned four, in what might be his best outing ever in a Sox uniform.

Meanwhile, the Sox run-manufacturing works was seemingly closed for business. The Sox had a chance to get back in the game in the 5th with runners on 2nd and 3rd, but Carl Everett was called out on a check swing to end the threat. The Sox did score one run in the ninth to get back to within one when a Juan Uribe sac fly brought home Aaron Rowand. But there was no joy to be had, as Willie Harris (who was pinchrunning for Joe Crede) was caught stealing second to end the game, and deflate the rally balloon.

The Twins roll into town tomorrow for a 2-game set at US Cellular, the last time we face them until August 15th. Jose Contreras takes the bump against Kyle Lohse for a 7:05 start on what looks like a gorgeous evening for the first night game of the season.

Ozzieball Update:
One steal? One sacrifice bunt? Move along, nothing to see here.
