"Opted to watch Monday Night Football over the Sox game... and we can't blame him."

Short Take: Grilli pitches best game of his year, but Sox can't figure out Gary Knotts in 4-2 loss.

Though the last week of games is pretty much meaningless for the White Sox and their opponents, it does carry some implications for several members of the roster. One of them is Jason Grilli, who is still auditioning for a role on either the White Sox or another Major League team for 2005. Monday, at Detroit, Grilli looked solid but was ultimately undone by one bad inning and a lackluster offensive performance as the Sox dropped their series opener to the Tigers, 4-2.

The Tigers scored first in the 2nd inning. After a lead-off walk to Carlos Pena, Craig Monroe tripled and then would come around to score a batter later on a sacrifice fly. Grilli, however, looked strong against a team that had given the Sox so many fits in recent years. Ultimately, he put the Sox in a position to win, and the offense did capitalize on Grilli’s performance, clawing back into a tie, scoring a run on a Ross Gload double in the 4th to plate Carlos Lee and then in the 5th on Joe Crede’s solo home run.

Meanwhile, Grilli still looked solid, but it all abruptly ended in the 6th. After getting two routine outs, Ivan Rodriguez innocently singled before Dmitri Young homered to give Detroit its 4-2 lead and ultimately the win.

Grilli, however, did pitch well, allowing only three hits on the contest and going the distance for his first complete game in his career. But he was out dueled by Gary Knotts, who allowed 5 hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.

Really, that was it. Willie Harris and Joe Borchard continue to struggle while Ross Gload continues to hit at a .322 clip. All in all, the Sox definitely looked like a team that had vacation and golf plans for next Monday already locked up.

Only 6 more days. The Sox and Tigers face off tomorrow in Detroit. Jose Contreras makes the start against Nate Robertson. Game time is 6:05 PM Central Time and it will be aired on Fox Sports Net Plus.
