"Maggs spends the day putting the finishing touches on the new baby room."

Short Take:  Rowand and Borchard both hustle and come up with big hits to sink the Tigers.

Since joining the Sox on July 31st, Jose Contreras has shown both streaks of what made him such a highly sought after pitcher when the Yankees signed him, and also what made the Yankees want to unload him. After solid outings in 5 of his first 6 starts, Contreras has been shelled in his last 3 starts. So the question entering todayís game was which Jose Contreras would show up. Would it be the pitcher who won 4 of his first 6 starts and allowed 2 runs or less in 4 starts, or the pitcher who was 0-3 with 19 runs allowed in his last 3 starts? That would be the single biggest factor in the outcome of tonightís game vs. the Tigers and starter Jason Johnson.

Contreras was spotted an early lead thanks to a little help from Jason Johnson. In the 1st inning with runners on 1st and 3rd and 2 outs, Johnson uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Juan Uribe to score from 3rd. But Contreras failed to hold that lead for very long. In the top of the 3rd inning Contreras allowed the first two hitters to reach on base hits. After an out and a walk, Ivan Rodriguez came up with the bases loaded and a chance to do some major damage. Rodriguez singled to score two but Contreras stayed out of a huge inning by rolling up a double play on the next hitter, Dmitri Young. The Tigers added another run in the 4th when Carlos Pena hit a solo homer. Contreras finally got some more run support in the 5th inning. After Willie Harris started the inning with a bunt for an out, the next 4 Sox hitters all reached base. It was Ross Gloadís double that scored the tying run in the form of Carlos Lee who reached via a single. The Sox loaded the bases for Joe Borchard who had one of his best games as a White Sox. Borchard took a pitch for the team and forced in the go-ahead run. But that didnít last long as the first batter of the next inning, Dmitri Young, tied up the game with a solo blast. With the game tied at 4, neither team scored until the game went to extra innings. Thatís when it got fun.

Neil Cotts was the pitcher when the 10th inning started. He entered the game in the 8th inning and pitched two perfect innings, which included 3 strike outs in the 8th inning. But Cotts wasnít the same in his 3rd inning of work. He allowed a leadoff single though he seemed to settle down, striking out the next two batters. Thatís when the wheels came off. Cotts allowed a 2-run home run to Dmitri Young to put the Tigers up by 2. After allowing another single, Cotts allowed yet another 2-run home run, this one to Carlos Pena. But surprisingly, the Sox didnít give up after the two big blasts. Wilson Valdez led off the Sox half of the 10th with a pinch hit single. Two batters later, Borchard smashed a line shot over the fence in left field. Timo Perez pinch hit for Joe Crede and just missed his own home run, but still wound up with a double. Aaron Rowand, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the 8th inning, found himself in a big spot. After watching curveball after curveball, Rowand finally got one that stayed up a big too high. He jacked it to left field and just like that, the Sox had tied up the game in dramatic fashion! Neither team scored in the 11th and Damaso Marte held the Tigers scoreless in the 12th inning as well. The same couldnít be said for Tigers pitcher Al Levine. With 1 out, Joe Borchard found himself in a big spot once again. He took a 1 out walk and advanced to 3rd base on a hit-and-run with Jamie Burke at-bat. With 2 outs, Aaron Rowand was once again up. He got jammed and hit a weak grounder to 3rd baseman Brandon Inge. But Inge struggled to get the ball out cleanly. His throw was a split second too late to get Rowand who beat out the throw. Meanwhile Borchard did not stop running from 2nd base. He made the turn at 3rd just as Inge was getting the throw off and by the time the Tigers realized Rowand was safe, Borchard had scored the game winning run for a thrilling 9-8 win!

The Sox look to win the series tomorrow with Freddy Garcia on the mound. Heíll face off against Jeremy Bonderman in a game scheduled for 2:05 CDT.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Rowand pinch hits in the 8th inning, then proceeds to tie the game once and eventually win the game.
