"Cheered on Venezuela's Little League baseball team in the LLWS."

Short Take: Jason Grilli makes first start of the season, allows 5 in the first as Sox fall back into third.

A night after the Sox picked up Josh Stewart with a massive offensive attack, it looked like they’d need to do the same for Jason Grilli, an off-season acquisition the Sox hoped would pan out to be the Esteban Loaiza of 2004. Instead, Grilli looked like Loaiza’s ’04 efforts, allowing 6 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings. Unlike Thursday, however, the offense was not able to pick up their starter against Cleveland’s ace, C.C. Sabathia, as the Sox dropped the second game of the set to the Tribe, 6-3.

Sabathia, a 2004 All-Star selection, had been struggling since late July. In his previous 7 starts, he had lost 4 of them and posted a 6+ ERA. On Thursday, though, he gave Cleveland a solid outing, going 6 innings, striking out 11 and allowing only three runs in 6 in the winning effort.

The Indians struck early against Grilli. After the Sox went scoreless in the first, Jason started the game off shaky, walking Matt Lawton and Omar Vizquel to start the game. However, after Travis Hafner and Casey Blake both flied out, it looked like Grilli would escape the inning unharmed. However, another walk to Ben Broussard loaded the bases and then Coco Crisp got the Indians’ first hit of the game; a single to right field to score Lawton and Vizquel. Ronnie Belliard put three more on the board with a homer to left and just like that, the Sox were down 5-0.

Give Grilli, some credit, though, he settled down after the first and looked solid the rest of his start, keeping the Sox within striking distance. However, the Pale Hose had little success against Sabathia, but in the fourth they finally kinked his armor. After a strike out to lead off the inning, Sabathia walked Konerko and then plunked Carl Everett. Juan Uribe then tripled to score the pair and then he scored on an infield single by Ross Gload. Ross would stroll into second on a throwing error by Belliard, but he died on base as Joe Crede and Borchard both were unable to keep the ball rolling.

In the fifth, with the score still 5-3, Omar Vizquel hit a sacrifice fly to put the Tribe up, 6-3, to sum up the scoring on the night. Though the bullpen trio of Jon Adkins, Damaso Marte, and Shingo Takatsu were sound, Sabathia, Rafael Betancourt, Bob Howry, and Bob Wickman kept the Sox off the scoreboard for the rest of the night.

With the loss, the Sox fall a game back behind the Tribe in the race for second and remain two games under .500. The Sox and Indians will square off again Saturday evening for the third game of the 4-game set as Jose Contreras goes against Cliff Lee. Game time is 6:05 PM Central time and will be aired on WGN.

Bullpen

Jon Adkins, Damaso Marte, and Shingo Takatsu clean up the mess, keep Sox in the game, but cannot get the three runs needed to pull out the win.
