Short Take: Sox pound Tribe in slugfest at Jake

It's nights like this that bring tears to Sox fans' collective eyes. Some of the tears are joy for their team picking up an all -too-far-between win, but mostly they're tears of sadness as fans think about where this team would be in the divsion if only their offense had shown up more often in the past 6 weeks the way they did tonight. Either way, the Sox walk away from the first game of the 4-game battle for 2nd place at Jacobs Field with a 14-9 win.

Tonight, at least, the White Sox borrowed a page from the Red Sox playbook that they must have picked up watching the BoSox score early and often against them last weekend. The Sox scored 6 runs before Cleveland even came up to bad, keyed by a 3 run blast off the bat of Carl Everett, a rare treat for the South Side faithful. Everett's home run followed a Paul Konerko RBI single, which scored Aaron Rowand. Juan Uribe followed 3 batters later with an RBI single of his own, and after Joe Borchard walked, the Sox had managed to chase Indians starter Chad Durbin. In his second plate appearance of the inning, Aaron Rowand singled home Uribe, and when all was said and done, the Sox really had managed to put up a big ol'crooked number.

Unfortunately, tonight's tilt meant the Sox 5th starter spot was open for business, and the hapless Josh Stewart got the call. Stewart allowed 2 Indians runs in the bottom of the first and another in the second, keeping the Tribe in the game for the time being. The Sox pulled back away in the 4th though, as Ross Gload singled home Paul Konerko, and Ben Davis followed up with a 2-run jack which brought home Gload and opened the game up for the Sox again. Too bad the lead still wasn't safe, as the Indians once again struck back in their half of the inning with a solo home run from Coco Crisp and a 2-run tater from Ronnie Belliard, sending Stewart packing. Ozzie Guillen brings on Neal Cotts in relief, who promplty gives up a triple to the always pesky Omar Vizquel, who would score on a Matt Lawton single, and cut the Sox lead to 9-7. Cotts would go on to settle down and earn the win, thanks to the efforts of Cliff Politte and Mike Jackson in nailing it down.

The Sox offense wasn't done for the night though, tallying another 5 runs in the 5th inning, with a Juan Uribe solo home run and singles from Konerko and Everett providing the cushion. Tonight's outburst puts the Sox and Tribe into a tie for second place in the AL Central, both both teams trail Minnesota by 8 games.

Same 2 teams face off again tomorrow night at 6:05. Jason Grilli gets the emergency start in the place of Freddy Garcia (stay tuned, folks) as he takes on C.C. Sabathia.
