More L's against the A's

June 1, at Oakland

Today's Free Agency Value:
$10,900,000
"Didn't play again, though was seen stretching out."

Short Take: Valentin ties game in 9th, but Kielty walks off for Oakland in 9th as West Coast blues continue.

This year has been all about the Sox breaking trends they had established in the last few years. Canít win at the Metrodome? Not anymore. Roll over dead to inferior talent? Nope.

But one streak the Sox didnít break was their inability to win on the road out West, as Neal Cotts gave up a 2-run homer to Bobby Kielty in the bottom of the 12th as the Sox lost a tough one and their Pacific Coast struggles continue.

Esteban Loaiza got the nod on the hill and pitched pretty well over 8 innings, scattering 9 hits and allowing 4 runs, though truthfully it could have been a lot worse as the Aís ran themselves out of a number of innings. They tacked on their first two runs of the night in the second and third, one on a double from Bobby Crosby, the second on a sac fly from Eric Chavez. Meanwhile, Mark Redman was baffling Sox hitters all night, but Paul Konerko finally touched him up in the 4th, with a solo homer to cut Oaklandís lead in half.

Loaiza kept the Sox in the game, but it looked like Jermaine Dye put the game away in the 6th with a two-run homer to left, but Frank Thomas got both runs back two innings later with his own two-run shot to again cut the lead to one.

Enter the drama. With Jim Mecir in for Oakland in the top of the ninth, he got Ross Gload and Timo Perez to innocently make outs to put Oakland 1 out away from a 4-3 win with Jose Valentin coming to the plate, who was one strikeout away from drawing the Golden Sombrerro. Instead, Valentin deposited Mecirís 2-strike delivery in the right field bleachers to tie the game at 4.

The Sox and Aís then traded scoreless innings, but in the 11th, things got interesting. Damaso Marte came back out to work what would have been his 3rd inning. Instead he gave up a lead-off walk and then drilled Eric Chavez on his hand. Shingo Takatsu came on and did his job, inducing a double play, but left with the winning run on third base, but Neal Cotts came on and ended the threat.

Unfortunately, the Sox could not take advantage and in the next inning, Cotts gave up the walk-off and the Sox could only take comfort in a moral victory, that they didnít roll over after allowing an early lead. But moral victories donít count in the standings and with the Twinsí 16-4 drubbing

Tomorrow, Mark Buehrle faces off against Mark Mulder in the conclusion of the brief two-game series at 2:05 on WGN.
