"Maggs sits again as Sox play it safe with nicked up star. Could a stint on the DL be next?"

Short Take: Schoeneweis goes 7 strong to beat old mates as bats come back to life on the South Side.

The White Sox came to play this afternoon, as Scott Schoeneweis pitched 7 strong innings and the bats did the rest to deliver an 11-2 decision over the Halos and take the series from visiting Anaheim. The start of the game was delayed 42 minutes due to an early morning deluge, which apparently affected the Angels more than the Sox.

The Angels did draw first blood in the first inning. Leadoff man and overall pest David Eckstein led off the game with a single down the third base line, and later scored on a two out single by Jose Guillen. Guillen was picked off to end the inning with the score 1-0. In the home half of the first, Willie Harris, who was 4 for 5 on the afternoon, led off with a single. Frank Thomas delivered an RBI double off starter John Lackey, scoring Harris all the way from first and tying the score. Lackey was torched for 8 runs on the day, and would only last through the third inning. Still in the first, Jose Valentin and Paul Konerko would both draw 2-out walks to load the bases for Ross Gload, who was in rightfield in place of Magglio Ordonez who is still nursing that calf injury. Gload would deliver a seeing-eye bloop single over the outstretched glove of Eckstein, scoring Thomas and Valentin to make the score 3-1 Sox after one inning.

Sox bats were active again in the second. The Sox scored early and often, doing all of their damage in the first four innings. In the second, Carlos Lee extended his hitting streak to 17 games by singling home Harris, who had previously singled. With Frank Thomas and Lee on base, Jose Valentin delivered a crushing blow off Lackey, a three-run blast to give the Sox a 7 to 1 cushion. Meanwhile, Schoeneweis was cruising, and already had more support than he would need today. He retired 7 in a row before giving up a solo shot to Vladimir Guerrero with one out in the 4th. Schoeneweis pitched his 8th quality start in 10 starts this season, allowing 2 runs and 5 hits over 7 innings with 4 K's and a walk. The Sox tacked on one run in the 3rd with a two-out single from catcher Sandy Alomar Jr., and an RBI triple by Harris. In the 4th, the Sox added three more insurance runs off relief pitcher Ben Weber, highlighted by an RBI double for Gload and a two-run single by centerfielder Timo Perez, who was thrown out at second to end the inning.

That would be all the offense on the day, but it was more than enough. Damaso Marte pitched a scoreless 1-2-3 8th inning, and Billy Koch got in some work with a 1-2-3 9th inning to wrap up the victory. The Sox with the win run their record to 29-20, and maintain a two-game lead over the Twins for first place in the AL Central. Tomorrow is an off day and the Sox head out West for a two game set with Oakland beginning Tuesday night at 9:05 CDT. Esteban Loaiza (6-3, 3.69) will face off against Mark Redman (3-3, 4.04). Enjoy the off day and I hope everyone has a happy and safe Memorial Day!

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Bats were clicking today to the tune of 14 hits. No significant smallball moves of note, but good situational hitting today. Oh yeah, 3-run homers don't hurt either.
