"Maggs sits again with a strained calf though is expected to play Saturday."

Short Take:  Garland with another good outing; Sox win the game in the 9th.

In a matchup of first place teams, the Sox squared off against the Anaheim Angels on Friday. The Angels entered play Friday tied for the most wins in baseball but in a slump having lost 6 of their last 10 games including being swept by the Blue Jays. With an improving Jon Garland taking the mound and baseballs highest scoring offense (entering Fridayís game) supporting him, the Sox chances looked good. But through 5 and Ĺ innings that didnít prove to be true. That was until Paul Konerko stepped up to lead the Sox to a 4-3 late inning victory.

Kelvim Escobar was brilliant against the Sox for the first 5 innings. The Sox only managed 4 hits over that time span and looked in need of help. The Angels gave Escobar an early cushion in the 1st inning. David Eckstein started the game with a leadoff double and two batters later Vladimir Guerrero singled to score Eckstein for the 1-0 Angel lead. But Jon Garland held the Angels down after that until the top of the 6th inning when Bennie Molina doubled to drive in Jose Guillen, who had singled two hitters earlier. In the bottom half of the inning the Sox finally found some offense. That offense came off the bat of Paul Konerko. After Carlos Lee singled with 1 out and stole 2nd with 2 outs, Konerko jacked a 2 run blast two left field to tie the game. But the Sox still had work to do.

In the bottom of the 7th the Sox had perhaps their best scoring opportunity, but blew it. With 1 out, Miguel Olivo tripled to right center field to give the Sox an easy chance to grab the lead. But Willie Harris couldnít get the run home as he fouled out to the catcher. Juan Uribe and Frank Thomas then walked but the runner was still on 3rd. With 2 out, Carlos Lee popped up to short to end the inning. The Angels didnít need any small ball rallies. With 1 out in the 8th, Jose Guillen smashed a go ahead homer to left off of Mike Jackson that gave the Angels the lead at 3-2. In the 8th inning, Paul Konerko was once again in the middle of the Sox scoring. Jose Valentin and Konerko led off the 8th inning with singles. Timo Perez then pinch hit for Aaron Rowand and came through with a run scoring single to tie the game. But the Sox failed to bring home another run in that inning and went to the 9th tied.

In the top of the 9th inning Shingo Takatsu entered the game and shut down the Angels 1-2-3 to give the Sox the chance to win the game with a run. In the bottom half of the inning, Juan Uribe led off with a triple to center. After an intentional walk to Frank Thomas, the Angels chose to face Carlos Lee. The move worked as Lee fouled out to the catcher. The Angels then intentionally walked Valentin to get to Konerko. This time, it didnít work. Konerko crushed a long walk off single to center field to give the Sox the 4-3 victory!

Coming off the thrilling 9th inning victory, the Sox will have a short turnaround as game 2 of this series starts at 3:05 CDT on Saturday. Jon Rauch will make his season debut in his first major league appearance since 2002. Rauch will face the surprisingly surging Aaron Sele (3-0, 3.05 ERA).

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
