Garland Gets It Done!

May 18th at Cleveland

Today's Free Agency Value:
$11,250,000
"2 walks, but nothing beyond that. Leave the offense to the overpaid guys who DON'T perform tonight."

Short Take: Exciting? Nahhh...but a win nonetheless

No matter how good or how bad they're playing, the Cleveland Indians will always be a thorn in the side of our beloved Chicago White Sox. The Sox-Indians rivalry has been around since before the Twins were even a glimmer in greedy old Carl Pholad's eye, but with the Indians in a prolonged rebuilding phase, few baseball observers pay much heed to them. regardless of how troublesome they are. After an uninspired performance last night that earned Felix Diaz a bus ride back to Charlotte, the Sox strike back with a 4-2 win tonight at rainy Jacobs Field.

Even if Jon Garland were to throw a no hitter tonight, he still would have been upstaged by Randy Johnson's display of perfection in Atlanta. Sorry Sox fans, but we'll have to settle for a 5-hit, 1-run outing from everyone's favorite chronic underachiever. Garland shows good command and control over 7 innings, fanning 6 while walking just one, improving his record to 3-2 on the season. Damaso Marte surrenders a run in relief, but Billy Koch comes on in the 9th to pick up his 7th save of the season. Like it or not, Sox fans, Koch is going to be the go-to guy with the game on the line. Sure, he's shaky, but as of late he seems to be getting the job done.

Sox fans were fearing the worst ealy in tonight's affair, as the offense struggled early on and the Indians jumped to a 1-0 lead. The Sox finally broke through in the fourth, ironically on the backs of some of the season's biggest underachievers. After Magglio Ordonez gets caught stealing, Frank Thomas belts a double, followed by a Carlos Lee walk. Sure is great to see Carlos do something besides flail away at the plate, isn't it? Jose Valentin then singles to load the bases, and Paul Konerko belts a 2-run single to give the Sox the lead. Miguel Olivo and Willie Harris follow up with singles, bringing home Valentin and Konerko respectively, and giving the Sox all the runs they'd need. Sure, it's not an offensive explosion like we saw last Tuesday, but we can deal with it, right Sox fans?

Tje Sox and Tribe finish their set at Jacobs Field tomorrow at 6:05 CDT. Scott Schoeneweis looks to solidify his role as the anchor of the Sox rotation against Ben Davis./p>

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Station-to-station ball in the 4th is all it takes for the win! Plate patience pays off.
