Sox Offense Shut Down

April 24th vs Tampa Bay

Today's Free Agency Value:
$11,500,000
"Didn't play today, and it was noticed as the Sox only scored 1 run."

Short Take:  Wright pitches well, but the bats go quiet and the defense hurts him.

If there were any expectations for the way this game would go, one would have to think the game would feature good offense on both sides. After all, Dan Wright hadn’t exactly pitched like a Cy Young winner in his first 2 starts, and the Devil Rays were sending Dough Waechter to the mound, a guy making his first start on the season. Waechter had never pitched against the Sox, which unfortunately proved to be a bad thing for the Sox rather than Waechter. Instead of a game with offensive explosions for each team, the Sox struggled to score runs while helping the Devil Rays score their runs. The Sox lost the game 4-1 with Wright taking the loss. He finished going 5 and 1/3 innings giving up 3 runs. But that doesn’t tell the whole story as not only did Wright get little run support, but the defense behind Wright also let him down.

When the first batter of the game, Carl Crawford, singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild throw, it seemed like this game had the makings of a poor outing by Dan Wright. But credit Wright who then retired the next three batters without allowing the run to score. The White Sox offense featured some drastic shakeups in this game and it showed in the way they played. Timo Perez started in center and led off. Magglio Ordonez got a day off with Ross Gload replacing him while Kelly Dransfeldt got the starting nod at shortstop. The Sox recorded just one hit in the first three innings, that coming off the bat of Dransfeldt. After 3 innings, the game was cruising along at 0-0, but that is when the Devil Rays finally took advantage of the Sox. Wright quickly retired the first two batters in the top of the 4th inning but Rocco Baldelli reached on an infield hit. The next batter, Robert Fick, would reach and Baldelli would score on a bad throw by Paul Konerko. Two hits later another run would score before Tino Martinez was thrown out at home on a relay started by Carlos Lee. Frank Thomas responded back with a solo blast in the bottom of the 4th inning. But that wasn’t all that Frank was involved in.

In the 6th inning Thomas was hit by a Doug Waechter pitch, this following up a high fastball that nearly missed Frank and bounced off his bat earlier. Frank was clearly upset but chose only to shout at Waechter and show his displeasure with the umpires for not ejecting Waechter, rather than charge the mound. The Devil Rays added one run in the top of the 6th inning and the top of the 7th to finish their scoring. The Sox bullpen took over from Wright in the 6th inning. Mike Jackson allowed a single to score one run, but retired the next two hitters to avoid further trouble. Neal Cotts would pitch 1 and 2/3 innings, but gave up his first run of the year. Shingo Takatsu pitched a scoreless 1 and 1/3 innings of relief at the end of the game. The Sox final chance game in the 8th inning when they had 2 men on with 1 out. Ozzie chose not to pinch hit Ordonez for Aaron Rowand and Rowand popped out. Thomas would walk against the wild Baez, but Carlos Lee chose not to be patient and hacked at the first pitch, popping up to 2nd. Baez remained shaky in the 9th but the Sox still couldn’t take advantage.

The Sox go into tomorrow’s game looking to win the series and avoid splitting the season series against the Devil Rays. Mark Buehrle will pitch for the Sox against Jeremi Gonzalez for the Devil Rays. The game starts at 2:05 CDT.

Ozzieball Update:
No Maggs, Dransfeldt at short, and Maggs not getting called on to pinch hit for Rowand - A strange day in Ozzieland.
