Extreme Letdown!

September 17th at Minnesota

"Jerry's fate was all but sealed with this loss as the Sox take a big hit to their playoff hopes."

Short Take:† Garland pitches poorly, but gets little support from the Sox bats.

It was Do or Die for the Sox on Wednesday night. And they certainly didnít ďDoĒ. The Sox looked pathetic for the second consecutive night in losing 4-2 to the Twins. The loss means that the Sox can leave Minnesota no better than 1.5 games out. And with the difference in schedule, that means that the Sox hopes of winning the division are slim and fading fast. This one was an extremely tough loss for any Sox fan to take. Not only because it was such a huge blow to the Sox playoff hopes, but because it was a loss so typical of the White Sox. Jon Garland got out of the 1st with a double play after walking a batter. In the top of the 2nd, the Sox looked like they might be the one to set a tone this time. With 1 out, Carl Everett and Paul Konerko singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd. But a Joe Crede fly out and a Jose Valentin foul out quickly ended the Sox threat. Once again in the 2nd, Garland used a double play to escape trouble and keep the game scoreless. But in the 3rd, it all unraveled.

The second batter of the inning, Michael Ryan, hit a solo home run to give the Twins the lead. But it got worse. With 2 outs and a runner on third, Luis Rivas reached on an infield single that Roberto Alomar could not make a play on. That would score the second run and a Doug Mientkiewicz double scored the third run. A 3 run lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning might not seem like much, but not with this Sox team. The Sox went into a complete shell getting dominated by Kenny Rogers. The Twins would add one more in the 5th before Garland left the game. His final line would be 4 and 2/3 innings allowing 6 hits, 5 walks, and 4 runs. Not a good outing for one of the biggest games of the year. And the Sox bats would continue to struggle. They didnít manage to put up a run until the 7th inning. In the 7th, Carl Everett would lead off with a single and two batters later, Joe Crede made things a little interesting by smacking a 2 run homer to left field.

But that is as close as the Sox would make it. They did give Sox fans a false sense of optimism in the 9th. Magglio Ordonez would walk to start the inning. But just as it looked like maybe the Sox had a little fight left in them, it would come to an end. Carl Everett grounded into a double play and the game was effectively over. A Paul Konerko fly out later and it was official. The Sox managed just 7 base runners on the game, including only 1 walk. The Sox offense failed to show up in this game, what else is new? The biggest series of the year and the Sox managed just 2 runs against Kenny Rogers. They will finish out the series tomorrow night as Bartolo Colon takes on Kyle Lohse. If the Sox have any hopes of miraculously making the playoffs, they will have to win tomorrow.

WSI's
Tinkerer Update:
