"Wright goes wrong and the Sox walk in 3 runs in a game they lose by 3. Guess that 4 man rotation is coming soon, Jerry?"

Short Take: Red Sox put on their walking shoes.

A 5th starter's job isn't that hard. All he has to do is trot out to the mound once every couple of weeks, pitch a few solid innings and let his offense stake his bullpen to a lead. Danny Wright currently holds that job for the White Sox- and if his performance review was to be based on his on-the-job duties tonight, he'd be fired. Wright and the Sox bullpen have one of their worst outings of the year, and the Sox fall to the Other Sox from Boston 7-4, extending their losing streak to 3 games. About the only positive news on the night for the 'Hose is that Minnesota blows an early lead and loses to Cleveland, keeping the two teams tied for first in the AL Central.

Dan Wright threw a 2-hitter tonight. Too bad it was through only a little more than an inning. "Wrong" managed to walk 5 batters in that short span and allow 4 runs. Message to Jerry Manuel: if Neal Cotts can get a start at Yankee Stadium, why can't Josh Stewart get one at Fenway Park? Surely Josh could have been at least marginally better than Danny the head case. How much longer are we stuck with this slug for? Wright gets the hook in the second and gives way to "Blowin'" Scott Schoeneweis. Schoeneweis only manages to walk one batter, but still gives up yet another run. For some unexplained reason (he wasn't doing THAT badly) Scott gets the hook and Billy "Botch" Koch trots to the hill. Koch throws a hitless inning..but that doesn't mean ANYTHING when you walk 4 batters during it! Koch allows 2 more runs to score before Kelly Wunsch and Tom Gordon come out to mop up the lost cause. On the night, Sox pitchers give up 5 hits and 12 walks.

Sox manage to outhit the AL's most potent offense tonight but only manage to plate 4 runs. Carl Everett and Jose Valentin both go deep for the Sox, who are going to need all the longballs they can get over the next 2 games at Fenway. They're both solo shots though and don't help the cause much. Magglio Ordonez adds a RBI single and red hot Joe Crede tallies an RBI double to complete the Sox scoring. Everett and Frank Thomas are the only 2 Sox hitters with more than one hit on the night.

Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night at 6:05 CDT. Can Bartolo Colon be a stopper once again against crafty knuckler Tim Wakefield?
