How Sweep It Is!

September 7th vs Cleveland

Today's temperature:
99
Nice to sweep the Tribe, but THE SEASON starts on Monday. Hopefully revamping the rotation will pay off with at least 3 wins.

Short Take: Corpseball gives way to long ball

Playing the Cleveland Indians is always a scary proposition for the White Sox. The rivalry stretches back for 1800+ games and 102 years, and for most part they always seem to match up tight. Even though the Tribe entered their weekend series against our Pale Hose with a record well below .500 and a lineup made up mostly of kids just off the bus from Buffalo, Sox fans still squirmed in their seats Sunday afternoon after 2 nailbiting games Friday and Saturday. Sox offense starts the game slowly but ends on a tear and the 'Hose walk away with a 7-3 win and a series sweep.

Sox fans always need to keep the antacid handy when Danny Wright toes the rubber. He's never truly bad, but never exactly impressive either. Wright wins the "Who Wants To be Our Fifth Starter" lottery this week and guts it out for 5 innings, surrendering just 2 runs on 5 hits. Both hits come on solo home runs from Ben Broussard and Casey Blake. Those gaffes aside, Danny gives Sox fans the outing they needed- limiting the Cleveland offense to minimal runs while gobbling up innings until the Sox bullpen can come in and shut the Tribe down. Wright showed great poise in the 4th inning, unjamming himself by retiring the side after allowing a leadoff double. By no means a beauty--but we'll take it. Wright leaves after five and gives way to a bullpen variety show-Kelly Wunsch, Scott Schoeneweis (who picks up the win), Damaso Marte and Tom Gordon all look awesome. while Scott Sullivan struggles once again. Sox defense was also brilliant today, as they manage to pickle 2 runners heading for home to keep the Tribe from breaking the game wide open.

Sox offense sleeps through their alarm clock for 5 innings today, but when they do finally roll out of bed they do it with a vengance! Through 5 innigs, the only Sox batters to even get a sniff of 2nd base were Magglio Ordonez (who got caught trying to steal 2nd) and Paul Konerko (who was out by a mile trying to stretch a single). All of that soon changed though as Cleveland pitching melted down in the 6th. Magglio Ordonez brings home Robbie Alomar with a single to finally put the Sox on the board. Carlos Lee follows with a sacrifice fly to score Frank Thomas and even the score at 2-2. But scoring the tying run wasn't enough for Big Frank as he blasts a 3-run home run the next inning to stake the Sox to a 5-3 lead..and they never looked back. Paul Konerko homers for the 3rd straight game and provides the insurance runs the Sox need. Konerko and Joe Crede are the only Sox batters with 2-hit days.

Tomorrow night the Sox face the first part of their season-ending exam against the Twins. Bartolo Colon takes the hill against Kyle Lohse.
