Texas Toasted!

August 17 vs Rangers

"We now return you to your regularly scheduled programing... Sox finish the roadtrip with one measly win. Comes a point in time, someone has to be held accountable for the Yo-Yo nature of the Sox season. It's coming down to put up or shut up time. Which way will Jerry's boys go..."

Short Take: Disastrous road trip ends with loss

The Chicago White Sox have historically had problems with teams from the AL West, and have historically had problems beating mediocre teams. When those two worlds collded in the form of the Texas Rangers, the recipe for disaster had all the ingredients in place. Chef Jerry Manuel adds a dash of tinkering and a teaspoon of stupidity, and the result is a sweep of the Sox by the bottom-feeding Rangers. Sox lose 6-4 and fall to 3 games out of first place in the AL Central, now tied with the suddenly resurgent Minnesota Twins. The Sox limp back to Chicago with a 1-6 record on the roadtrip, and one has to think the angry and bitter boobirds may be out en masse at US Cellular Field tomorrow night.

Neal Cotts toed the rubber for the Sox tonight and didn't look bad at all. His first outing last Tuesday, he walked six--tonight he instead fanned six, only walked two and gave up four runs on five hits. Not a bad outing--but the question begs to be asked, should the Sox be auditioning prospects when they're in the midst of a tight division race? Neal Cotts will probably turn out to be a solid ballplayer, but I'd much rather see us trying a new guy out with a 5 game lead, or in a more likely scenario given the Sox recent play, a 10 game deficit to the division leaders. Cotts leaves the game in trouble, but Scott Schoenweis gets him out of it and ends the innning. Jerry Manuel looks to the bullpen again for the 7th and bring son Damaso Marte, who is really starting to show the toll a long season of eating innings takes on a lefty's arm. Marte allows two runners to get on, and then surrenders a triple to Alex Rodriguez that puts the game out of reach for the anemic Sox offense.

Believe it or not, the Sox actually had a shot at winning this game. The Hose rallied from a 3-0 deficit by playing smallball, with the struggling Jose Valentin and Joe Crede somehow managing to push runners home after a Paul Konerko single put the first run on the board. But smallball quickly turns to corpesball and the Sox sleepwalk their way through the rest of the contest. Fittingly enough, Jose Valentin hits into a game ending double play. Props to Carl Everett picking up his 1000th career hit with a 9th inning single, but mega-disses at the same time for his horrendous defensive theatrics this weekend. Everett is also the only Sox hitter to tally multiple hits on the night.

Sox return to the Cell tomorrow night to face off against the Anaheim Angels, who just took 3 out of 4 from them last week. In a repeat of last Wednesday's pitching matchup, Mark Buehrle squares off against Jarrod Washburn.
