Bullpen Delivers!

August 12 vs Anaheim

Today's temperature:
91
For once, the Sox get the breaks and manage to score a bunch of runs without the benefit of the long ball. The boys will need to keep doing this if they want to make the playoffs. The bullpen bails Jerry out and he has the good sense not to abuse it in the process.

Short Take: Big Dan Saves The Day

Monday night, the Chicago White Sox looked downright impotent against the defending World Series champs, and that's in spite of scoring 8 runs. Every time the bases were loaded, the 'Hose would find a way to pop out, ground out (sometimes into a double play)or strike out. For some reason, that mysterious malaise was long gone Tuesday. Sox thump the Angels 10-4 at Edison International Field, taking full advantage of a Kansas City loss to move to within 1/2 game of first place in the AL Central.

Neal Cotts made his debut on the big league stage tonight, and it was a shaky one, The good news is he only allowed 2 runs on 2 hits--but the bad news is that he walked 6, including one with the bases loaded. Neal did show a lot of poise and that wicked fastball as well. This kid is gonna be something special, it's just going to take a little time. Cotts got the hook in the 3rd inning with the bases loaded, and Jerry Manuel trotted out Danny Wright, instilling fear in the hearts of Sox fans as the team clung to a small lead. For once, Danny didn't disappoint. He worked his way out of the pickle Cotts had left him with and cruised through 4 more innings to pick up his first win of the season at last. Note to Jerry Manuel: just because Dan got the win tonight does not make him a 5th starter! Keep him in the pen, he obviously can work out of there. Kelly Wunsch and Tom Gordon finish the game for the Sox and allow just one run.

Sox offense used small ball to put up a big ol' number on the scoreboard tonight. In fact, they didn't even hit one home run..only the secnd time in a week that that's happened. The Sox 3-run 4th which started with a Carlos Lee double was a classic example of station-to-station baseball. Lee's double scored Robbie Alomar. Maggs Ordonez steps in and singles home Lee, moving Frank Thomas to third. Paul Konerko lifts a fly ball to deep right which scores Thomas. Just like Little League, the Sox move runners effectively. The Sox seventh was another example of solid smallball, with Joe Crede, Carlos Lee and Sandy Alomar all getting the chance to pad their RBI stats. Lee was the top offensive performer of the night, going 3 for 6 with 2 RBI.

Game 3 of the series is tonight at 9:05. Mark Buerhle looks for yet another W against the always tricky but struggling Jarrod Washburn.

Magglio Ordonez

Sets the tone early by driving in a 2-out run in the first and then getting himself in scoring position to be driven in himself.
