Sox stumble to second

August 9, 2003 vs. Oakland

"Well the tinkering is back. Maybe Jerry thinks no one will notice if it isn't on a getaway day. Konerko is still at first and still not justifying the move. Oh well, Sox can still win the series on Sunday..."

Short Take: Oakland prevails 7-2 in a game you just have to put behind you.

Roughly 21 hours after claiming sole position of first place in the American League Central, the White Sox began a 3-hour cough-job that ended with them losing 7-2 to the Oakland Athletics and, again, finding themselves in Kansas City's afterburners.

This one was over quickly.  As it turns out, the 3 runs scored by Scott Hatteberg, Jose Guillen, and Miguel Tejada turned out to be enough to win it.  However, facing Ted Lilly (the 5th starter in the Oakland rotation), it seemed that the Sox would be able to put some runs up on the board.  That didn't quite work out, as the Sox finally got on the board in the 5th, but by then it was already 6-0.  Though the Sox pushed 2 runs across, the board, after Lilly left the bases loaded, Chad Bradford struck out Frank Thomas and got Magglio Ordonez to ground out to strand the bases loaded.  Offensively, the Sox only had marginal chances to get back into the game, as they managed 3 more hits in the last four innings.

The unfortunate, story of the night, though, was the disappointing performance of Jon Garland.  Though he went 5 innings, he allowed 9 hits, 6 runs (though only 3 were earned), struck out three and walked one.  His ERA jumped to 4.61 and his record fell back to .500 at 8-8.  Aside from him, Kelly Wunsch, Dan Wright, Scott Schoenweis, and Billy Koch all worked an inning of relief.  The only real blip on the bullpen's radar was a solo home run off hit by Ramon Hernandez off Koch in the 9th, but by then the game was well over.

So, with tonight's loss coupled with Kansas City's 6-2 win over Tampa Bay, the White Sox again find themselves 1/2 game off the Royals' pace.  Minnesota also defeated Detroit, 8-4, meaning the Twins are now only 2 games behind the Sox and 2.5 out of first in the Central in what is continuing to shape up as an exciting 3-horse race.

The rubber game of the series is tomorrow at U.S. Cellular Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:05 PM Chicago time.  The Sox send the American League's surprise pitcher of the year, Esteban Loaiza, to the hill while the A's couple with the American League's rookie pitcher of the year, Rich Harden.

WSI's Tinkerer Update: Tony Graffanino leads off and plays second for Robbie Alomar, Aaron Rowand bats 2nd in center for Carl Everett (who saved yesterday's game with the 'D'... figure that move out), and Jaime Burke starts at catcher and bats 9th, which really isn't tinkering because Sandy's knees won't hold up everyday, but we merely mention it for formality.
