Short and Sweet!

August 8 vs Oakland

Today's temperature:
89
"As the season gets later the temperature starts to drop. Is this a preview of fall baseball in Chicago? Nice to have pitchers like BurlyMon, Big Bart and ELo to count on in big games."

Short Take: Buehrle Report Card: A+ vs A's!

Normally, the arrival of a West Coast team in Chicago would portend nothing but grey skies and dark clouds for our beloved Pale Hose--especially when the team is the Oakland Athletics. Oakland walked away from the Windy City with 2 out of 3 games in their pocket. But that was then, and this is now! Oakland's return trip to Chicago to face the new-and-improved White Sox starts off on a high note for the home team, as the Sox walk away with a 3-2 win thanks to one of the best outings of Mark Buehrle's career against a potent offense as well as a Cy Young caliber pitcher in Mark Mulder. Thanks to a little help from the cellar-dwelling Devil Rays, the Sox now have sole possesion of first place in the AL Central. Anyone who said 2 months ago that this team could catch Kansas City was insane, right?

Mark Buehrle's performance tonight is tough to put into words, but let's try. Words like "solid," "poised" and even "lights out" can all be used to describe his trip to the hill tonight. Mark gives up 2 runs early but shuts down the usually dangerous A's offense the rest of the way, notching 6 strikeouts and no walks to tally his second complete game of the year. Mark brings his record to 10-11, which is amazing considering at one point in the season he was 2-10. It's hard to peg what exactly he is that he's doing right, but the kid's gotta keep on keepin' on. Buehrle is his usual quick self...sending the A's back to their bus less than 2 hours after first pitch. Mark got plenty of help from the Sox defense tonight too. On the rare occasions when the A's did get the bat on the ball, Sox outfielders were right there to make sure that even the hardest hit ball to the outfield only ended up being a long single. Carl Everett, who is often ripped apart for his lack of defense, made a game-saving Randy Moss-style leap to pull back a Ramon Hernandez blast that could have been a home run.

Sox offense only hit one home run tonight, but still managed to push enough runs across the plate to earn the W. Trailing 2-0 in the 3rd, Tony Graffanino lifts a sacrifice fly to center field that brings home Joe Crede. The equalizer comes when Magglio Ordonez hits a high fly to left center that looked for sure like it was going to turn into an Eric Byrnes robbery worthy of ESPN's Web Gems. Somehow though, the ball falls into the stands and Byrnes falls back to the field. What better way for the Sox to get the go ahead run than on Joe Crede grounding into a double play? Joe's slow roller with the bases juiced scores Carlos Lee and put the Sox ahead for good. In addition to Ordonez, Robbie Alomar and Carl Everett both tally multiple hit games. Looks like the new guys are really starting to come around.

Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night at US Cellular with a near-sellout crowd expected. Jon Garland gets the nod against Ted Lilly.
