That's More Like It!

August 5th vs Kansas City

"A big victory in a must win game for the Sox. Can Bartolo pull out the Series win Wednesday? Will Jerry's boys rise to the occasion? If they are ever going to be taken seriously, they need to close out this series."

Short Take: Loaiza sharp as Sox hang on for win

Tuesday night, 38,000+ butts were plunked into the blue seats at US Cellular Field on yet another perfect summer night for baseball on the South Side. Monday night, the fans came and left angry and bitter at the impotence of the Sox bullpen. But "Turnaround Tuesday" was in full effect last night as the Sox walk away with a 5-4 win to pull to back within 2 games of the Royals in the AL Central.

The game didn't start off well for our South Side heroes. The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Raul Ibanez singled home Aaron Guiel. Both these guys seem to have a real penchant for tearing the Sox apart, has anyone noticed? But one run was not a safe lead as the Sox counterpunch with a 5 run second that demonstrated that the Sox can play small ball as well as use the long ball to produce. Miguel Olivo gets things started singling home Paul "Wheels" Konerko. Jose Valentin tries to score as well but gets mowed down because he hesitated just a bit too much rounding 3rd. C'mon Jose, stop thinking so much and just put that head down and run! Roberto Alomar singles home Olivo, who does his best impression of a surface to air missile as he dives around Brent Mayne to score. Miguel left the game with a sore shoulder..and of course as luck would have it, it's the shoulder that his cannon of an arm is attached to. Let's hope it's nothing serious, I don't know if we can ride Sandy Alomar to the playoffs. Carlos Lee singles home Alomar. Then comes the coup de grace-yet another monster home run from Frank Thomas! The Big Hurt scorches a ball over the CF fence to extend the lead to 5-1. Slump? What slump? The guy is clearly back in the groove. That was enough for Kansas City starter Kyle Snyder, and enough for the Sox to get the win.

Estaban Loiaza and quality starts have gone hand in hand this season, as evidenced last night. E Lo racks up a high pitch count (which matters only to Jerry Manuel) but is highly effective, striking out 7 while walking just one. Estaban lowers his ERA to a league leading miserly 2.30, and would probably have the Cy Young in the bag if not for Roy Halladay. Loaiza gave way to Kelly Wunsch, who was unhittable. Wunsch gets the hook for the eminently hittable Billy Koch. Koch promptly serves up a double and gets yanked. bringing in a shaky Damaso Marte, who overcomes control problems and sloppy defense from Joe Crede to nail down the save.

Sox finish off their 3 game set against their pesky and annoying division rivals Wednesday afternoon at 1:05. Big Bad Bartolo Colon looks for a good outing against Kris Wilson.
