Takin' Down the Tribe!

July 22 vs Cleveland

"Five in a row and back to .500 for Jerry's boys..but the real test comes on the road against real teams."

Short Take: Colon Steady as Sox Cruise

  • Once again, just when we all thought it was safe to write the Sox season off and get ready for July clearance sale, the Sox show signs of life. Sox complete a 2 game sweep of the Indians, win their 5th game in a row, and bring their record back to the break-even point 100 games into the season by knocking off the Tribe 5-2.
  • Bartolo Colon takes the hill for the Sox today and posts his best outing in a while. Big Bart goes 7 2/3 innings, mostly very strong until letting the Tribe patch together 2 runs in the 8th. What makes this Sox fan happy about Colon is that he didn't try to throw junk on the mound today, but instead just threw fastballs for strikes. Colon fans 4 and walks none while giving up 6 hits, most of which came late in the game. Damaso Marte handles relief duty and earns his 6th save of the season. It looks like the left handed closer committee of Marte and Tom Gordon is what this team needs to run with.
  • Once again, the Sox rely on the long ball to put their opponents away. All 5 Sox runs come as a result of home runs. Frank Thomas starts things off right with a tape measure 2-run blast in his first at bat of the game. Big Frank is now just one HR shy of joining the 400 club. Let's see if the Chicago press notices. Not to be outdone, Magglio Ordonez, batting right behind Thomas, jacks a solo shot off hapless Jason Davis. All of a sudden, it's 3-0 and the Sox are in the catbird seat for the rest of the game. Magglio would end up 3 for 4 on the day, with Thomas putting forth a 2 for 4 effort. We'll take it!
  • Carlos "The Redeemer" Lee makes up for his moronic baserunning last night, giving the Sox some insurance with a 2 run homer in the 6th which brought home Carl Everett. Sure, chicks dig the long ball, but this team's gonna need to string together hits now and then as well.
  • In the non-long ball category, Robbie Alomar goes 2 for 4 and starts to look like the guy we wanted to pick up at the beginning of July. Miguel Olivo proves that he's not always an automatic out as he notches a hit on the afternoon as well. Recently hot Tony Graffanino goes 0-for-3 and probably needs a few days rest to get over all the excitement.
  • Sox head north of the border for a 2 game set (!!) with the Toronto Blue Jays. Mark Buerhle looks for another strong outing. He's gonna really have to be hot to knock off Roy Hallday and cool off the Jays' always torrid offense.

Tinkerer Update:
Daubach at 1B, Graffanino at 3B.
