July 21st vs Cleveland

"4 in a row and the Sox are looking better and better. Cleveland and Detroit can do that for a team. Better find some more bullpen help or Marte and Gordon will be dead by the end of August if not sooner."

Short Take:  The Sox get just enough out to squeak out a win against the Indians.

What would White Sox baseball be without the emotional ups and downs the Sox provide their fans with? After losing the first game of the second half against the Tigers, the Sox strung together 3 straight wins and looked to extend that to 4 on Monday night. They did so by sending Mike Porzio to the mound. While Porzio was merely mediocre, the bullpen backed him up strongly and the Sox scored just enough runs to give them the win by a final score of 4-3. The win moves the Sox back to 1 game under .500. Joe Crede started the scoring with a solo shot in the 2nd inning. But that lead would disappear quickly as Porzio allowed 3 runs in the top of the 3rd. After retiring the first two batters, the Injuns strung together 4 consecutive hits to plate 3 runs. But the Sox would make their own response in the bottom half of the 3rd. Tony Graffanino walked to start the inning and Roberto Alomar followed that up with a single. The two then executed a double steal to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. After a Frank Thomas strikeout, Magglio Ordonez doubled to right field. But Alomar had to hold up on 2nd to see if the ball would be caught or not. Alomar only got to 3rd and Maggs hustled the hit into a double. Two batters later, Carl Everett took the first pitch he saw and drove it to left field to drive in Alomar and Ordonez which gave the Sox a 4-3 lead.

Surprisingly, neither team would manage to push across another run in the game. Rick White relieved Mike Porzio in the 6th and held the Indians down for his 2 innings of work, allowing only 1 hit and striking out 4. Tom Gordon relieved White in the 8th and proceeded to do what White did, shut down the Injuns offense. But the big question would come in the 9th. With Gordon having pitched 1 inning already, would Manuel stick with him to finish out the game or dare take a chance with Billy Koch? Smartly, Manuel stuck with Gordon and the move would pay off. Gordon walked the first batter but then struck out the following two hitters and got pinch hitter Travis Hafner to ground out to first to end the game. For once, it seemed that every move Manuel made worked out for the better.

Tony Graffanino once again got a start and he played well again. Graffanino went 1-2 and walked twice meaning Manuel will make sure he rests tomorrow. Paul Konerko snapped his mini hitting streak with an 0-3 game but he continues to look more confident at the plate and is swinging the bat much better. Since Konerko has started to hit better, the Sox offense has been playing better. Coincidence? Perhaps, but whatever it is, let’s just hope it doesn’t end anytime soon. The Sox will wrap up this short 2 game series against the Injuns tomorrow at 1:05 cst with Bartolo Colon going to the mound for the Sox against Jason Davis. The Sox look to sweep the 2 game set before heading up to Toronto for another 2 game series. With a 4 game winning streak, the Sox are now 6 consecutive wins away from Hawk shaving his head.

WSI's
Tinkerer Update:
Graffy starts at short and bats leadoff, Konerko starts at 1B again.
