Trying on A New Pair of Sox!

July 2nd vs Minnesota

Today's temperature:

"What a difference a couple of weeks make. Jerry makes a statement about the importance of this game when he gets thrown out in the first inning. The team comes from behind two different times - once in extra innings. Finally winning to complete the sweep and get back to .500. "

Short Take:† Sox overcome mediocore pitching to win in walk-off style!

Sox Fans, can you get enough of these types of games? The Sox won this game in exciting fashion once again, winning by a final of 8-6 in 12 innings! But Jerry Manuel would not be around to see it. He was ejected in the first inning after arguing a called home run. It was a close call as it looked like the ball hit off the foul poul, but Manuel felt it hit off a fan in foul territory. Manuel would argue and eventually get run, possibly to show his new players that he sticks up for his team. The Sox offense battled throughout the entire game to keep the Sox in the game, and eventually give them the win. Itís almost hard to believe that this is the same team that Sox fans agonized over a few short weeks ago. Yet tonight they once again played with heart and came up with some clutch hits. To cut to the chase, the Sox entered the bottom of the 11th inning trailing by 1. Two quick outs later, the Sox were seemingly done as Paul Konerko stepped up to pinch hit for Brian Daubach. Seem like an easy 3rd out? Think again. Konerko jumped all over an Eddie Guardado pitch and drove it over the wall in left field to tie the game and give the Sox new life! The biggest hit of the year for Paul Konerko by far. Sox fans, letís hope this is what it takes to get Konerko hitting again. But that would only tie the game. After getting 3 outs in the top of the 12th, the Sox came to bat looking to end the game and keep the bullpen from having to pitch another inning. With 1 out, newcomer Roberto Alomar walked after almost ending the game with 1 swing himself. Tony Graffanino would come close to ending the game as well, but he came up short hitting a deep fly ball to left center field. That left it up to Frank Thomas. Frank would foul off pitch after pitch before finding one exactly to his liking. He crushed the ball high and deep to left field for a game winning, walk-off 2 run home run!! Sox fans, it sure is great to see the players excited, isnít it?

But before the late inning heroics by Frank and Paulie, the Sox actually looked like they would lose this one. Dan Wright once again started off rough allowing 2 runs in the 1st, and then another 2 in the 3rd to put the Sox down 4-0. It was actually in the bottom of the 3rd that Thomas connected for his first home run of the game. That was also a 2 run shot that cut the deficit to 2. In the very next inning, Brian Daubach chipped in with his own 2 run blast to tie the game. In the 5th, Magglio Ordonez drove in Jose Valentin to give the Sox a 5-4 lead. But they would surrender that lead in the 7th inning with Damaso Marte on the mound. Marte inherited a runner on second and after a sacrifice and a strike out, would allow a base hit to Torii Hunter to tie the game. The game would stay that way until the 11th inning when Billy Koch would seemingly blow another game. Koch got the first two hitters out but then surrendered a triple to Luis Rivas. He went to a 3-0 count on Bobby Kielty but rather than put Kielty on to face the weaker hitting Christian Guzman, he would give Kielty a pitch to hit on 3-0. Kielty did not miss and singled to drive in the go ahead run. But as you know by now, the Sox would not let that beat them.

The Sox did not play a perfect game by any means, but they got it done when it mattered. Dan Wright allowed 4 runs in 4 innings before making way for Rick White. White allowed 1 run in his 2 innings of work. Marte, and Tom Gordon would each follow up with 2 scoreless innings of their own to force extra innings. Billy Koch picks up yet another win even after allowing the possible winning run in the 11th. Roberto Alomar and Carl Everett also made their debut in this game. Everett did not do much in the game but did draw a walk in his first plate appearance as a White Sox. Alomar finished 1-5 with 1 walk. He would also score the game winning run on Thomasí winning blast. But the biggest play Alomar made came in the 9th when Robbie ranged to his right and after making a backhanded catch, flipped the ball to second with his glove. Valentin would finish off the double play (one of 4 DPís the Sox turned on the night) but it was certainly nice to see the defense by Alomar.

The Sox will have an off day to absorb all of this as they travel to Tampa Bay where they will start a 3 game series against the pitiful Devil Rays on Friday. The Sox will send Bartolo Colon to the bump to face Victor Zambrano for a 4:15 cst game.

WSI's
Tinkerer Update:
† Carl Everett makes his White Sox debut in center and Roberto Alomar debuts at 2nd. Thomas starts at DH and Daubach at 1B.
