Jose Jose Jose Jose!

June 27th vs Cubs

"The team continues to win despite Jerry's obvious stupidty. He should have been fired a long time ago..."

Short Take: Welcome to THE CELL, Cubbies!

Chicago's very own Civil War shifts to the South Side for 3 games, and the White Sox start the weekend off on the right foot with a 4-3 win against the fuzzy little bears from up North. Nothing particularly pretty about this one aside from Jose Valentin's game winning home run in the 9th, but we'll take it! 45,171 turn out on a sun-drenched Friday afternoon and everyone wearing silver and black goes home happy.

This game didn't look very good for the Sox in the early going. Danny Wright gives up a solo home run to the second batter he faces and the Sox look like they left their bats in Minnesota, managing just a pair of singles in the first 5 2/3 innings. Wright escapes giving up just one run on the afternoon, but 6 hits and 4 walks make for plenty of situations where he needed to bear down and unjam himself. His control still doesn't look great, but at least his poise does. Wright posts 3 strikeouts on the afternoon...2 of which come against Scammin' Sammy Sosa. Tom Gordon pitches 1 1/3 innings of phenomenal relief and 1/3 of a very shaky one, leaving Billy "Kardiac Kid" Koch to mop up in the 9th. Koch surrenders the tying run, but thanks to timely hitting, all too rare this season, still gets the W.

Sammy Sosa was of course the center of attention this afternoon. Mr. Megalomaniac goes 0 for 5 on the afternoon with 3 strikeouts. Earplugs or no earplugs, I guarantee he heard those "CORKY! CORKY!" chants raining down on him. But enough about Shammy, let's talk about the REAL sluggers in Chicago: Frank Thomas, Carlos Lee and Jose Valentin! Big Frank homers in the 6th to tie the game, El Caballo hits a jack to right in the 7th to put the Sox ahead, and Valentin comes on in the 9th and puts the game away against Antonio "El Pulpo" Alfonseca. I wonder if Alfonseca has those extra fingers to make it easier to count the number of games he chokes in? Magglio Ordonez also comes through with a timely RBI single in the 8th that sure did come in handy when you look back at the final score.

Game 2 of Chicago's war of attrition is tomorrow at 3:05. Bartolo Colon looks to go the distance this time around against Carlos Zambrano.
