Loaiza's Revenge!

May 29th at Toronto

Today's temperature:
93
"Jerry has to be feeling a little easier with his team salvaging a split, and the Sox not coming home for a while."

Short Take:  Loaiza is sharp again as he picks up for the Sox lack of offense.

  • After the way this series started, a split doesn‘t sound too bad now does it Sox fans? Esteban Loaiza was back in Toronto tonight with a vengeance as he faced his former team for the first time since his bitter departure. Loaiza took the mound determined to rack up his 8th win of the season against the Blue Jays, and he did just that. He kept Blue Jays hitters in check all game long allowing the Sox to score only 3 runs and still win by a final of 3-2. It certainly wasn’t the run support Loaiza would have liked, but it worked for this game.
  • The Sox lack of offense made it more crucial for Esteban Loaiza to pitch like he has all year long. Loaiza was up to the challenge by going 7 and 2/3 innings and allowing only 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks. He also struck out 4 and allowed a home run to Carlos Delgado in the 2nd inning which gave Toronto the temporary lead. Luckily, the Sox offense would have just enough to make sure that home run wasn’t too costly.
  • The Sox offense was mediocre throughout most of the game, but they were able to put up 3 runs thanks to some bad defense by the Blue Jays and a little small ball on their own part. The Sox scored all their runs in the 4th inning which featured back to back hits to start the inning by Magglio Ordonez and Brian Daubach. An error by Carlos Delgado would give the Sox their first run. An infield hit by Miguel Olivo would score Daubach, and a sac fly by Joe Borchard brought home the Sox third and final run of the game.
  • Esteban Loaiza would hold the lead from their but did allow a more run to make it 3-2 Sox. Damaso Marte would relieve Loaiza in the 8th inning to face Delgado. The move worked as Delgado flew out to end the inning. Marte stayed on to strike out the first batter in the 9th but then made way for Billy Koch. Koch retired the 2 batters he faced and earned his 6th save of the season as he continues to pitch well.
  • Magglio Ordonez was the lone bright spot for the Sox at the dish tonight. Maggs extended his hitting streak to 13 game (his second 13+ game hitting streak of the year). He was 3-4 on the game with a run scored. While Jose Valentin did not get a hit in the game, his presence was certainly felt as his hustle on the bases forced the Jays into making errors, allowing the Sox runs to score.
  • Paul Konerko sat again today as Frank Thomas played first and Brian Daubach started at DH. Konerko would later pinch hit but couldn’t do anything in his only at-bat. Daubach meanwhile has improved upon his early slump but still isn’t hitting well enough. He had a hit and a run scored today. Neither of them have played well enough to deserve starting every game, but one of them must start now for the Sox offense to start clicking.
  • The Sox continue their long road trip by heading to Cleveland for a 4 game series with the Injuns. The series gets under way tomorrow at 6:05 cst as Danny Wright looks for his first win of the year against C.C. Sabathia. In his 4 games since coming off the DL, Wright has pitched 2 good games and 2 bad games. He would be due for a bad game so lets hope he can snap that streak.

WSI's
Tinkerer Update:
Thomas starts at first for the second straight game. Daubach at DH, and Borchard bats 9th.
