Beat down in O-Town!

May 6th At Oakland

Today's temperature:
95
"Bad outing yet again. But do you fire a guy when he's 2 time zones away?"

Short Take:  Popouts and bobbles galore!

  • The Sox start a 6 game road trip in Oakland on the wrong foot, losing 6-0 to the Oakland A's. It seems like last time the Sox won in Oaktown Kenny Williams was just another organization stooge and Frank Thomas was a force to be reckoned with. Oh wait, that's true. Sox haven't won at Network Associates Coliseum since the glory days of 2000.
  • Where do we start with the investigation on this train wreck of a team? How about defense, since their offense no longer exists? D'Angelo Jiminez was tonight's goat, dropping a routine popup to second base in the first inning that allowed 3 runs to score. D'Angelo had his glove twisted the wrong way and was dancing the merengue while trying to field it...of course he's not gonna make the play. To add insult to injury, Jose Valentin comitted a throwing error.
  • Mark Buerhle didn't look sharp tonight, but wasn't godawfulrotten either. Only 2 of the 6 runs he gave up were earned, and with the exception of 2 walks in the first inning, he looks to be getting his control back in line. Oakland's hits were for the most part scattered over his 7+ innings of hard labor.
  • It's going to be hard labor for the rest of the year if the offense keeps sleepwalking like it did tonight, and Sunday night, and Saturday night...you get the idea. The Sox scratch out a pathetic 5 hits against Mark Mulder, only 2 of which left the infield.
  • Until recently, when you heard the names Konerko or Ordonez, you'd probably think "double." But now, double play is the term of the week for these guys who are supposed to be part of the meat of the Sox order. Pauly and Mags each rolled into a DP tonight, and recent callup Willie Harris showed that he too is worthy of playing in the bigs with his tap to short setting off the 6-4-3.
  • Tonight's fun fact #1: Not once did Sox players reach base back to back. Tonight's fun fact #2: The contending A's only drew 10,695 to the ballpark tonight. Imagine how bad their attendance would be if they had to watch the feeble Pale Hose 81 times a year.
  • Same teams at the same park tomorrow night. Estaban Loaiza takes the hill and tries to prove he can pitch in a month not beginning with "A."
