Fog Bowl!

April 30th vs Oakland

Today's temperature:
86
"The pressure is mounting as the Sox continue to fall short of expectations but Manuel isn't the one failing to get hits."

Short Take:  Sox bats don't show up and the Sox get no help from the weather.

  • Another day, another lefty 20 game winner, another White Sox lose. Just when you think youíve gotten past the best pitcher on their team, the Aís throw another good lefty out and the Sox just couldnít hit him. Illinois native Mark Mulder was fantastic while the Sox did their best impersonation of the Tigers. White Sox starter, Mark Buehrle, was decent but to win this one he would have had to pitch a shutout. The Sox lose 4-1 though you have to wonder if they even noticed.
  • The fog was the big story of the game. Two delays, one after the third and another in the top of the fifth, totaled 45 minutes. But the worst part was that the fog may have cost the Sox the game. With a runner on 1st in the 5th inning Eric Byrnes hit a fly ball to right that would have normally been an out. But Magglio Ordonez could not see the ball due to the fog and simply threw his hands up. The ball fell and a run scored with Byrnes ending up on third. A long delay followed the play and the fog finally lifted but the damage was done. Byrnes would score from 3rd and the Sox could not overcome.
  • Mark Buehrle was hit around after the delay and gave up 2 more runs before being pulled. Maybe he was effected by the delay, but it certainly did not affect the way Mulder pitched. Buehrle just has not been himself of late as he suffers his 3rd lose in as many starts, and 4th overall. Then again, he has only been given 1 run of support in his past two outings. Sox fans, itís not looking good when our aces are a collective 4-6.
  • Positive offensive performances? Not likely in this game. There were few positive at-bats! The Sox had only 4 base runners all night. Frank Thomas hustled out an infield single in the 7th only to have Magglio Ordonez ground into a double play. In the 4th, Jose Valentin singled with the next batter, Thomas, grounding into a double play. The Sox just canít seem to string together multiple hits. Every possible rally usually ends in a double play these days. The one lone run scored on a Joe Crede ground out after a Carlos Lee double.
  • At least the Sox bullpen had a strong outing in this game. About time. Rick White, Tom Gordon, and Billy Koch each pitched a perfect inning. This is the story of the Sox this year. When the offense and starting pitching goes well, the bullpen is bad. If the offense is good, the pitching isnít. The Sox just canít put together a complete all around game.
  • At least Paul Konerko seems to be coming around. In the 2nd inning Konerko took a pitch to deep right field for a double which extended his hitting streak to 9 games. On the other side, Aaron Rowand had another 0ífer to drop his average to .125. With Rowand playing so poorly, the start of the Joe Borchard era canít be that far off Sox fans, can it?
  • The Sox try to avoid a sweep tomorrow at 7:05 cst with the underachieving Jon Garland taking the hill against the overachieving John Halama. Sox fans are still waiting for Garland to step it up to the next level. It will be a tough task going against the Aís, so Garland needs to have best stuff.

WSI's
Tinkerer Update:
Graffy starts at second; Konerko stays in the 6 hole.
