Stinkin' Up The Cell

April 25th vs Minnesota

Today's temperature:

"No pitching? No hitting? I'm still not yelling!"

Short Take:Cy Young Mays still has our number

  • Hey Sox fans! What South Side institution smells worse: the old Chicago Stockyards or the 2003 Chicago White Sox? After tonight's outing, I've gotta go with the latter. Horrendous pitching early and a lack of offense late (well, and early) lead to a sloppy 6-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins.
  • Sox "ace" Mark Buehrle may want to play in St Louis, but for the first couple innings tonight he looked like he was playing for a bus ticket to Charlotte. The Twins jumped on Mark early and often as he spotted them a 3-0 before the Sox even had the chance to bat. He's not getting shelled with the long ball, but just keeps giving up hits. Have the Twinkies figured out his brand of junk?
  • Joe Mays may appear to be just another slug to every other team in the AL, but he continues to have the Sox's number. Mays retired the first 11 batters he faced, plunked Frank Thomas with a pitch and then retired the next 5 batters in order before FINALLY giving up a hit. Of course, it's not hard to retire the Sox...just have your shortstop ready to grab the slow roller coming at him after yet another feeble White Sox swing.
  • One of the more disappointing aspects of tonight's ugly performance was the inability of the Jiminez-Valentin tandem at the top of the lineup to get anything going. D'Angelo and Jose were a combined 1 for 8.
  • The one chance the Sox had to rally in this game was squandered just as quick as it started. Frank Thomas finally figured Mays out in the 7th inning with a monster HR to left field, and Magglio Ordonez and Paul Konerko got on base. But Armando Rios, in typical 2003 Sox fashion, promptly grounded into a double play. Inning over. Scoring opportunity blown.
  • Fittingly enough, the game ended with Paul Konerko grounding into a double play. Konerko's funk just keeps on rolling just like those feeble grounders he keeps tapping to the left side.
  • Sox fans may have garnered some pleasure from watching Twinkie bigmouth Doug Mientkiewicz get plugged in the elbow after being greeted with a chorus of boos.
  • Same teams at the same place tomorrow night. Jon Garland needs to step it up about 10 notches to save his job. There had better be some fireworks during the game instead of just afterwards.

WSI's
Tinkerer Update:
Lee sits on the bench, Rios takes his spot...and Aaron "O-fer" Rowand is back in CF.
