April 17th vs Kansas City

"Timely hitting, solid pitching, another series win, Jerry's boys are on a roll."

Short Take:  Pitching and Hitting both come through to give the Sox the series win.

  • The Sox had a short layoff after the exciting win last night, and they came out ready to play today. All the key components were there for the Sox to win this one. Sox starter Esteban Loaiza was simply outstanding today and the Sox brought their bats to this one. The Sox baffled the Royals all game long and the end result was an impressive 8-2 win over the Royals.
  • This is more like the Royals we are used to seeing. Their fielding has been less than impressive the past two games and their pitchers are starting to walk more batters. Could this be the end of their hot streak? We won't find out for a few days because the Royals get a nice rest over the next few days in the form of the Detroit Tigers. But Sox fans, let’s hope this is the start of their descent from first place!
  • Where to begin? Pitching or Offense? I'll start with the offense because this is something we haven't seen this year. The Sox brought their big bats to the game today, ready to pound some long balls…and that is exactly what they did. The Sox hit 4 homeruns on the day. It started in the 2nd inning when Miguel Olivo hit his first homerun on the year, a solo shot. The next batter, Tony Graffanino, would do the same for back-to-back homeruns. In the 3rd Paul Konerko would get a solo shot of his own to give the Sox a 4-0 lead at the time. But the biggest shot of the game came in the 5th inning when Carlos Lee stepped to the plate. The previous batter, Konerko, was intentionally walked to load the bases and bring Lee to the plate. Lee did not disappoint smashing a low pitch to left field for a Grand Slam! Hopefully this will help Lee get going. This slugfest was a thing of beauty.
  • But the pitching also came through in a big way in this game. Esteban Loaiza was magnificent in this game. Loaiza brought his best stuff and went for 6 strong innings allowing just one run. Loaiza also had 11 strikeouts on the day which tied his career best. The outing lowered Loaiza’s ERA to 1.31 and gave him his 3rd win in as many outings as a member of the White Sox. This continues to look like a great pickup by Ken Williams. Let’s hope Loaiza can keep this up!
  • Another pitcher worth noting is Rick White. White pitched 1 and 2/3 innings today which lowered his ERA to 1.59. Overall, the Sox team ERA is at 3.30 which puts them at 3rd in the AL and 7th in all of baseball. If the offense can find its rhythm we may see more games like the one we saw today.
  • Aaron Rowand continues to struggle and is now batting only .167 after going 0-4 today. Rowand is certainly giving Manuel reason to play Armando Rios more and with Rios batting over .300, it can't be much longer before Manuel names Rios as his starting centerfielder.
  • Fresh off a series win over the Royals, the Sox will host the Cleveland Indians starting at 7:05 CST tomorrow. Bartolo Colon will make his second start against his former team opposing Ricardo Rodriguez. It should be interesting to see how Sox hitters react if Rodriguez starts to show them up like he did to the Royals last Sunday. Hopefully they will make him pay one way or another.

WSI's
Tinkerer Update:
Graffanino starts at second; Rowand back in center.

Is the slump over? Carlos shows pena that walking Paulie to get to him is a bad idea.
