Sox try new Colon

April 2nd at Kansas City

"Letting the RH half of the SS platoon bat against the Royals RH closer down by a a run wasn't smart. Having him bunt on 3-2 was down right pathetic...."

Short Take:  Sox actually score, but still come up short as poor fundamentals take their toll.

  • After months of waiting, White Sox fans finally got a chance to see the Sox biggest off season acquisition, Bartolo Colon. Unfortunately he was mediocre at best. Colon went 6 innings and allowed 3 runs in a frustrating 5-4 loss to the Royals. The loss drops the Sox to a disappointing 0-2 start on the season. At least they actually scored some runs this game.
  • It sure was great to see Jerry Manuel jump at the chance to act like an actual manager wasn't it Sox fans? Manuel did everything he could to make it look like he wasn't sleeping in the dugout including using everyone on the bench except Jose Valentin who got the day off against a lefty. Lo' and behold one of his moves actually paid off! In the 8th inning while trailing 5-3 Manuel pinch hit Armando Rios for Aaron Rowand with a runner on second. Rios singled to right field driving in Joe Crede
  • The Sox entered the 9th inning trailing by 1 run and that's when Manuel reverted to form. Royals closer Mike MacDougal walked leadoff man D'Angelo Jimenez to start the inning. Manuel sent up Tony Graffanino who showed bunt on the first two pitches which led to a 2-0 count and things were looking up. Unfortunately the Sox lack of fundamentals came back to haunt them. Rather than forcing MacDougal to throw a strike, Graffanino squared around again. A failed bunt attempt and another ball later and the count was 3-1. Did Graffanino (3 for 4 on the day at this point) take a pitch? No, he attempted another bunt and fouled this one off as well filling the count. He had to be given the green light now, right Sox fans? Nope one more fouled bunt attempt and there was one out.
  • It didn't get any better with the next batter. Frank Thomas stepped in and got ahead in the count 1-0, but he promptly helped McDougal out by swinging at the next pitch and grounding meekly into a double play to end the game. Sox fans, was this a pathetic 9th inning performance or what?
  • If there was anything good that came out of this game, it's that Joe Crede continued to look impressive as he went 2 for 4. Also, new White Sox closer Billy Koch pitched a perfect 8th inning in his Sox debut.
  • A quick note to Carlos Lee and Aaron Rowand: feel free to get a hit at any time.
  • The Sox will make one last attempt to get a win in this series tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 CST as Jon Garland will take the mound. A season opening sweep against the Royals is NOT something Sox fans want to think about. The Sox better bring their "A" game tomorrow.

WSI's
Tinkerer Update:
Graffanino starts against the lefty. Then stays in the game to bat against a righty in the ninth inning. Make up your mind, Jerry. Is it a platoon or not?
