Pre-Game Report

The Sox beat the Blue Jays 8-0.  Jon Garland was brilliant, scattering six hits in a complete game shutout, striking out nine.  The Sox also won the series two games to one.  We're excited.  We're truly excited.

Unfortunately, it was probably the last game of the season.  The Sox are off Thursday and are suppose to play a game in Detroit Friday evening.  Chances are they'll never board a plane.  A strike by the Major League Baseball Players' Association is suppose to take effect earlier that day.

Well, things could be worse than avoiding a trip to Detroit, eh Sox Fans?

The first six Sox runs came on dingers.  Carlos Lee started things in the second inning with a solo shot.  Magglio Ordonez clouted a three-run shot in the third inning and a two-run shot in fifth.  Jeff Liefer added a two-rbi single in the seventh scoring Frank Thomas and Carlos Lee.  It was a hell of an effort by the White Sox team.

Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel saw fit not to tinker in this game.  Unlike his natural tendency the past two seasons, he played a natural thirdbasemen at third (Joe Crede), a natural shortstop at short (Jose Valentin), and a natural secondbasemen at second (D'Angelo Jimenez).  What a novel concept for the man who admits he lots to tinker, even though it usually doesn't work.

Has Manuel finally figured out not tinkering might be the most effective bit of tinkering he could possibly do?  Sox Fans, don't bet on it.

As if last month's salary dumps that didn't succeed in dumping salary weren't bad enough, Kenny Williams will apparently be in charge of major changes to the roster before the next Sox team takes the field--whenever that might be.  If there was any lingering doubt about this, club chairman Jerry Reinsdorf put it to rest before today's game in a short, spiteful clubhouse meeting with his players.

Reinsdorf told the team he was disappointed in their performance and promised lots of changes.  If wasn't being spiteful, wouldn't giving this speech during last month's freefall have been more effective?  What a spiteful, hateful idiot he reveals himself to be once again.

Can he fire himself?  We Sox Fans are sure disappointed in his performance!  Nobody has been a loser running a ball club in this town longer than Reinsdorf.  It's about time this spiteful hateful man shouldered the blame for the twenty-two seasons-long mess he has created.  Will he finally sell?

Don't bet on that either, Sox Fans.

Tinkerer Update:
Last game of the season, Manuel doesn't tinker.  Figures.

Jon Garland

A complete-game shutout, first in his career.  Six hits allowed.  Nine strikeouts against just one walk.  If he was about to make a decent salary, Kenny Williams would probably trade him for a broken down minor leaguer.
