Pre-Game Report

Inside
JERRY'S HEAD

Okay Sox Fans, time to put the paper bags over your heads.  The Tampa Bay Devil Rays come to Comiskey with perhaps the worst starting pitcher in the league (this side of Todd Ritchie) and beat the daylights out of our Sox.  8-2 was the final on Flying Elvis Night.  Maybe the Sox ought to be buried in the barbeque pit, too?

This is a team definitely looking forward to an early off-season.  They showed nothing against Tanyon Sturtze.  The head case went the full nine innings striking out six hitters.

Meanwhile, Jon Garland was looking like somebody who wishes he was anywhere but here.  He fed his gopher in the second and the fourth innings.  The Sox were down 3-0 after four innings.  Next they simply rolled over and played dead.

Ten men left on base, six of them with two out.  Magglio Ordonez and Paul Konerko didn't have a hit all night.

Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel saw fit to play the same lineup he used in Thursday's game.  Aaron Rowand and Jose Valentin picked up four hits at the top of the order.  Unfortunately they also struck out three times.

Garland was finally chased in the sixth inning, but not until he had been charged with five earned runs.  The bullpen was mostly effective the last 2.2 innings, except Antonio Osuna got touched for a run in the eighth.  Hey, what's one more run allowed when your offense is getting shutout by Tanyon Sturtze?

The humiliation nearly complete, Sox Fans caught a break in the ninth inning when the Devil Rays revealed themselves as the pigs they truly are.  Jeff Liefer started the inning with a solo homerun.  Joe Crede followed with another homerun helped over the wall by the outfielder's mitt.

That was it.  No amount of fielding gaffes and fat pitches from the Devil Dogs could possibly resuscitate this brain-dead outfit assembled by GM Kenny Williams.

More corpseball tomorrow--more likely than not.

WSI's
Tinkerer Update:
Don't blame me.  I used the same lineup that beat Cy Mays Thursday.
