Pre-Game Report

Lost amongst the hand wringing over inexperienced starting pitchers, a tinkering manager, and overpaying for incredibly lousy veteran ballplayers, the ineptitude of the Sox offense has often been overlooked.  That's what made Sunday's rubber game victory over Seattle so impressive.  It was timely hitting by the Sox--and a pair of defensive gems from an unlikely source--that made the winning difference.  The Sox conclude a successful homestand, holding on to beat Seattle 6-5, win the series, and take 4 of 6 from the two best teams in the A.L. West.

Boy, if they could have shown us Sox Fans this much two months ago!  If only...

James Baldwin made his return to Comiskey starting for Seattle.  His teammates spotted him a 1-0 lead, but that didn't stop "Big Inning" from working his magic on behalf of the Sox.  The Sox erupted in the second inning for five runs on six hits, keyed by back-to-back dingers by Jeff Liefer and Joe Crede

Don't laugh too hard Sox Fans.  Baldwin is getting paid less than Todd Ritchie and wouldn't have costs us three pitching prospects to get either.  That Kenny Williams is one shrewd general manager, isn't he?

Danny Wright was struggling, too.  Spotted a 5-1 lead, he gave two of them back with a two-run gopher ball in the very next inning.  Jose Valentin helped out by hitting a solo shot in the bottom of the frame, and the score stood at 6-3 after three innings.

As we've seen countless times before, the Sox offense then went into a slumber.  That usually means lights-out against a quality opponent like Seattle.  However a pair of defensive gems by Valentin at short, one on a lined shot and the other on dying infield roller pulled Sox pitchers through in two innings.

Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel was hell-bent to find the losing formula, pulling Danny Wright in the seventh, reliever Mike Porzio after just one batter, then Keith Foulke, and Damaso Marte after that.  The Tinkerer just knew somebody in that bullpen had a homerun fat pitch to serve up.  He nearly found it when Jeff Cirillo's line shot bounced an inch beneath the top of the wall off Foulke.

Close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, and the brim angle of Torii Hunter's cap.  Antonio Osuna got the final out with Seattle's tying run at third base and their go-ahead run at second.

Sox Fans say, "Beat it, losers."

Tinkerer Update:
More bullpen roulette nearly costs the game!
