Pre-Game Report

Inside
JERRY'S HEAD

Back in 1997, Jerry Reinsdorf claimed it was necessary to ditch Sox Fans' hopes for a playoff appearance because several free agent players would be lost over the winter with the Sox getting "nothing" in return.  Just two weeks ago, Reinsdorf presided over yet another dismantling involving veterans, again to prevent getting "nothing" for players who would otherwise leave.

Chairman Reinsdorf, meet Jim "Nothing" Parque, the compensation draft pick the Sox received for free agent Alex Fernandez after the 1996 season.  "Nothing" got his first win in nearly two years and made plenty of Sox Fans proud in the process.  As for Reinsdorf lying, what else is new?

Parque battled into the sixth inning, allowed two earned runs, five hits and picked up the win, 3-2 over Anaheim, thanks to some solid relief work by the Sox bullpen.

The Angels scored in each of the first two innings.  When slug Benji Gil started the second inning with a dinger, Sox Fans wondered whether the cheap thrills of watching Todd Ritchie lose #16 wouldn't have been a bit more entertaining.  That would be the last Halos run of the evening.  The Bulldog is back!

Frank Thomas got back both runs for Parque in the bottom of the inning, a two-run shot with Paul Konerko on base.

It stayed that way until the fifth inning when Carlos Lee drilled a two-out solo dinger to stake Parque to the lead. Wow--since when do our Dead Sox get timely hits?

Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel made liberal use of his bullpen.  Bid surprise, huh?  Rocky Biddle entered with one out and one on in the sixth, striking out both batters he faced.  Kelly Wunsch was given the first two outs of the seventh before Captain Hook returned signaling for Keith Foulke from the bullpen.  A nifty 6-4-3 double-play in the eighth got the former Sox closer out of hot water, and Damaso Marte was called in.

The Tinkerer was determined to find SOMEBODY in that bullpen to lose this game.   He nearly found it when Marte gave up a double to the first man he faced, but he got the third out and pitched a solid ninth for the save.

Two of three from Anaheim and two consecutive one-run victories makes for a nice effort by our Sox.  Too bad they weren't playing this way ten weeks ago.  It might have made a difference.

Tinkerer Update:

Marte gets the save.  And Osuna wonders?

Jim Parque

5.1 innings, five hits, two earned runs, and the win--his first since April, 2001.  Nothing spectacular but a huge effort from a guy left for dead just three months ago.
