Pre-Game Report

Inside
JERRY'S HEAD

This was a game the Sox played for hardly more than simple pride.  The opponent was first-place Minnesota, who has been busy most of the season whining about one injustice after another.  This was the rubber game of a series that should have had more meaning than simple pride, if only the Sox had kept up their half of the bargain by playing baseball better than eight games under .500

So naturally the Sox sucked again.  8-1 was the final.  Jon Garland was shellacked.  This team surrendered its pride months ago, sometime shortly after Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel rolled out his 50th new lineup.  He had a new one today, too!

Lost amongst all the unfathomable player moves The Tinkerer has employed, there has been one sure-fire constant:  if Royce Clayton plays, he'll bat #9 and play shortstop.  Not anymore!  The Tinkerer put Clayton at #8, dropping the slumping catcher Mark Johnson to #9.  Here's betting he won't do that again for another three weeks.  He never does.

The new pitching strategy that had the Sox singing like birds earlier this month has been an unmitigated disaster for Jon Garland.  Pitching away, away, away, and then jamming inside hasn't quite worked for the youngster.  He rightly interpreted the true meaning of this genius plan as nibble, nibble, nibble, and then Ba-Boom!  Homerun!

The "Ba-Boom" part came in the fifth.  Garland walked the leadoff man (great!), gave up a single next, and then served a 1-0 meatball to Corey Koskie.  The Twins would scored five times in the inning, so naturally the Sox rolled over and died.

Ray Durham keeps making the case for getting traded off this sinking ship, another three hit day for him.  Frank Thomas clouted his third dinger in as many days, and Minnesota is smart enough to start pitching around him again.  Still Kyle Lohse (he with the cap two sizes too big), with a seven-run lead, was "man enough" to pitch high and tight to Frank in the eighth inning, nicking the big man, and sending him to first base.  No warning--let alone an ejection-- from the umpire, since this ump wasn't the same hyperactive retard that gave the heave-ho to Rocky Biddle in Monday's game.  Obviously there was no whining from the  Teeny-Tiny Weenie Twinkies, wetting their pants over this one.

The next Sox batter Jose Valentin got them back.  His bat "slipped" from his hands on a 1-0 pitch, and went flying straight into the Teeny-Weenie's dugout.  Jose's ash salvo had the head weenie, Ron Gardenhire, cowering in the corner.

Maybe this team has pride after all?

Frank Thomas

His dinger all that separated the Sox from another shutout defeat.  1 for 2 with a walk, Also hit by pitch, but it was an accident.  The next batter Jose Valentin let his bat fly into Minnesota's dugout.  That was an accident, too.
