Pre-Game Report

How many times has Sox ace Mark Buehrle been brilliant, but a tough-luck loser because the team around him couldn't give him the proper support?  Tuesday night at Comiskey, Buehrle's teammates made it up to him.  A mediocre 5.2 innings performance is still enough for Buehrle to win his thirteenth game, the Sox holding on for an 8-7 victory over first-place Minnesota.

Sox Fans, it wasn't easy, but it certainly was dramatic!

Buehrle was touched for a run in the top of the first, but a drive into the first row of right field seats by Magglio Ordonez, put the Sox on top 3-1 in the bottom of the frame.  Kudos to Aaron Rowand and Carlos Lee for being on base for the big event.

The Sox exploded for five runs in the fourth, sparked by homeruns by Frank Thomas and Rowand.  The two-run shot by Thomas was especially noteworthy, a 495-foot bomb that bounced on the railing at the rear of the left field bleachers and caromed onto the concourse, the longest in New Comiskey history.

In yet another WSI EXCLUSIVE--your adroit WSI reporter was right there to see the ball land square on the rail, not six feet from his folding chair!  Sox Fans, you simply can't get this sort of coverage from the Cubune!  That was us wearing the white "Totally Biased" WSI shirt with khaki shorts just to the left of where the ball landed.

When you're seated in the handicapped-access box behind section 160, you aren't expecting to be very close to any action.  That platform is at least 30 feet higher than the playing surface and another 100 feet back from the wall.  So it was surreal to see that screaming mimmie of a line shot carrying that far straight towards you.  You keep expecting it to die and fall 10 rows down.  However Frank hit it so hard the damned thing just kept coming--and it didn't take long to reach us.  Yes, the railing of the box is two rows closer to the playing field than the other sections of seats on either side, but so what?  That mother was every bit of 495 feet.  Frank ought to get bonus points for muscling it the entire distance, not anything like those mortar shots Mark McGwire used to loft high into air.  Mortar shots are for wussies.

Still Sox bats fell silent and Minnesota naturally launched a comeback.  They scored two runs in the fifth, and three more in the sixth.  Buehrle left with the lead, but Sox Fans knew the collapse was soon to descend on us.

Minnesota fell one run short in their comeback thanks to Bob Howry stopping them dead in their tracks for two innings.  He struck out three, walked nobody, and pitched out of a jam unscathed, inheriting two runners and nobody out.

Damaso Marte made life exciting in the ninth, but Antonio Osuna got the final out.  Rubber game Wednesday afternoon.

Bob Howry

Entered the game with two runners on base and nobody out, but pitched out of the jam unscathed, then pitched another inning of scoreless relief.  3 K's and no walks.  Stopped Minnesota's five-run comeback dead in its tracks.
