WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Lowe knows "W"

(May 25)

Short Take:  Big ninth inning comeback!

Hello again, Sox Fans.  It's not quite so depressing to count yourself in our number after a thrilling six-run ninth inning comeback led the Sox all the way back for an 8-4 Sox victory!

It sure didn't start out very hopeful.  Starter James Baldwin had nothing, and left after 3.2 innings trailing 4-0.  Meanwhile the Sox hitters were watching Tim Holt pitch a no-hitter, something that seems almost inevitable to happen to this anemic Sox team.

Sean Lowe turned this game around by himself.  He got Baldwin out of the fourth by inducing a groundout then proceeded to strikeout six Tigers over the next four innings.

Finally in the sixth inning Jose Valentin broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff triple.  Magglio Ordonez doubled Valentin home and Harold Baines sacrificed Ray Durham to cut the deficit to 4-2.

That set the stage for a dramatic ninth inning.  With one out, three consecutive singles led to one run and set the stage for a clutch at-bat by Jose Valentin.  Quickly down 0-2 in the count to Detroit closer Todd Jones, Valentin worked the count to 2-2, then slapped one to the right of the diamond that bounced off the glove of a diving Tony Clark, scoring the tying run.

But the Sox weren't done yet!  Tony Graffanino reached on a fielding error and Ray Durham punched a three-run double up the middle!  Ordonez added another run with a double and suddenly we Sox Fans were confronted with a most unusual occurrence:  the Sox batted around!

Keith Foulke nailed it down in the ninth and the Sox pull out perhaps the most gratifying victory of the season.

To hell with losing.  One win at a time, Sox Fans!

4.1 innings of shutout one-hit relief work, including six K's.  This gutsy performance (too rare from the bullpen this year) put the Sox in position for a ninth inning comeback.  A clutch performance!
